This position is ideal for someone who enjoys digging into returns, identifying missed opportunities, improving accuracy, and helping maintain high-quality standards across a busy tax practice. This is primarily an off-season position with the potential for expanded responsibilities during tax season. Position Overview You will be reviewing completed individual and business tax returns prepared by other staff members before filing. Your role is to act as a second set of eyes focused on: Missed deductions and credits Incomplete or inconsistent information Audit red flags Mathematical and reporting accuracy Tax law compliance Opportunities to improve client outcomes Identifying questions that should be clarified with the client before filing This is a critical quality-control role within the firm. Responsibilities Review prepared federal and state tax returns for accuracy and completeness Identify overlooked deductions, credits, carryforwards, and tax planning opportunities Verify supporting documentation and consistency between source documents and returns Review returns for audit exposure and questionable positions Ensure compliance with current IRS and state tax regulations Flag missing information, inconsistencies, or unusual items for follow-up Communicate review notes clearly and professionally to preparers Assist with higher-level or complex return preparation when needed Help maintain the firm's quality and accuracy standards Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who: Has strong experience preparing and/or reviewing tax returns Has excellent attention to detail Understands common audit triggers and tax compliance issues Can identify both technical errors and practical concerns Thinks critically and asks good questions Works efficiently without sacrificing accuracy Is dependable, professional, and organized Is comfortable working independently Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in a tax preparation or CPA firm Strong knowledge of individual taxation; business and entity experience is a plus Experience reviewing returns prepared by others Familiarity with Drake Tax Software preferred, but not required EA, CPA, or equivalent experience is a plus Ability to handle confidential information professionally Position Details Flexible off-season hours available Potential for increased hours during tax season Remote work may be available for qualified candidates Competitive compensation based on experience and skill level About Us Tax Team is a growing Wisconsin-based tax preparation firm focused on accuracy, responsiveness, and maximizing refunds allowed by law while maintaining strong compliance standards.
