Job Description

The Position The purpose of this classification is to perform clerical and customer service work functions associated with receiving and processing utility payments. Duties Performs customer service functions; provides assistance and information related to utility services, accounts, bills, procedures, forms, problems or other issues; responds to routine questions, complaints or requests for service; researches account discrepancies and problems; initiates problem resolution. Receives/processes utility payments by mail, drive-through window, night deposit, or in person. Counts/balances cash receipts; records balances; prepares bank deposits and forwards as appropriate. Maintains adequate supply of currency and coins to dispense change to customers; initiates requests for change from bank. Posts payments to proper account on computer. Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data in computer database; verifies accuracy of data and makes corrections; generates computerized reports; uses knowledge of various software programs to operate a computer in an effective and efficient manner. Processes a variety of documentation associated with departmental operations, per established procedures and within designated timeframes; performs necessary calculations; copies and distributes reports, forms, correspondence, and other materials; maintains records as appropriate. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, receipts, utility bills, override sheets, notices, or other documents. Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, utility bills, override sheets, returned checks, registers, schedules, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate. Receives, opens and distributes incoming mail; prepares outgoing mail. Maintains inventory of departmental supplies; initiates requests for new or replacement materials. Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary. Responds to routine requests for information or assistance from customers, employees, the public, or other individuals. Communicates with supervisor, employees, city departments, customers, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Monitors/maintains security of premises, documents, and cash receipts; shreds confidential or obsolete documents; may package obsolete records for storage; opens and locks offices or drive-through facilities.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by Vocational/Technical training in banking, bookkeeping, accounting or general office administration; supplemented by one (1) year related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Mathematical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
Functional Reasoning:
Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning:
Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties, which are often characterized by frequent change.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability:
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.
Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as violence disease, or rude/irate customers.
