Exempt Position Description The Controller serves as the senior financial leader of the organization and is responsible for the overall management, integrity, and accuracy of all accounting and financial reporting functions. This position oversees full-cycle accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, staff accounting, tax compliance, forecasting, budgeting, and financial analysis while also supporting licensing, insurance, bonding alongside other departments. The Controller provides both strategic financial guidance and hands-on operational leadership to ensure strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and accurate, timely financial reporting. This role manages the Accounting and Purchasing teams and partners closely with executive leadership to support growth, operational performance, and long-term financial planning. Key Duties & Responsibilities Financial Management & Reporting Oversee and perform full-cycle accounting functions, including A/P, A/R, general ledger, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting. Prepare and present monthly financial statements, KPIs, and variance analyses to executive leadership. Develop and maintain annual budgets and ongoing financial forecasts. Monitor cash flow, working capital, and liquidity to ensure operational stability. Ensure accuracy and integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts. Compliance, Risk & Controls Ensure compliance with federal, state (including AZ and NV), and local tax requirements. Manage and or prepare monthly tax filings including Sales Tax and GRT, coordinate with HR on payroll tax, and ensure compliance and completion of any annual reporting requirements. Support upkeep and coordinate with others on all corporate licenses, contractor licenses, insurance policies, and bonding requirements. Develop and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies. Coordinate with external CPA firms, auditors, banks, and financial institutions. Oversee employee credit card program, including policy compliance, reconciliation, and expense monitoring. Operational & Strategic Leadership Provide financial insight and strategic recommendations to the CEO and executive leadership. Support operational leaders with job costing, margin analysis, and departmental financial performance. Evaluate and improve accounting systems, reporting tools, and financial processes. Assist with financial planning for expansion, capital investments, and growth initiatives. Participate in leadership planning and long-term organizational strategy. Supervisory Responsibilities Directly manage Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Staff Accountant(s), and Purchasing personnel. Establish departmental goals, KPIs, and performance standards. Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching and professional development. Ensure cross-training and continuity within the Accounting and Purchasing teams. Maintain accountability for accuracy, timeliness, and professionalism within the department. Collaborate with HR and executive leadership on compensation planning and performance initiatives. Education & Work Experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred. Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience. Minimum of 5 years in a senior accounting leadership role. Experience managing accounting teams required. Experience in construction, telecommunications, or project-based industries strongly preferred. Skills & Abilities Expertise in accounting software and ERP systems. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial modeling. Strong understanding of job costing and project-based accounting. Ability to analyze complex financial data and present findings clearly. Proven ability to implement and improve financial processes and systems. Strong negotiation and vendor management skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information. Capable of balancing strategic planning with hands-on execution. Certifications, Licenses & Other Requirements Valid driver's license (if occasional travel between offices is required). Ability to pass background screening consistent with company policy. Ability to work extended hours during month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close periods as needed.
