This role ensures accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting across all rooftops while building scalable processes, strong internal controls, and a disciplined close and reporting cadence aligned with private equity and lender expectations. The Group Controller oversees dealership accounting across vehicle sales, F&I, parts, service, warranty, inventory, and floorplan activity, and partners closely with the CFO, executive leadership, and dealership management to support growth, acquisitions, margin improvement, and enterprise value creation initiatives. Key ResponsibilitiesMulti-Rooftop Accounting Operations & Close Oversee day-to-day accounting operations across multiple dealership rooftops, including: New and used vehicle sales and inventory accounting F&I income, chargebacks, and reserves Parts, service, and warranty accounting Floorplan interest, curtailments, and lender reconciliations Cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and intercompany activity Lead a standardized monthly, quarterly, and annual close process across all rooftops in accordance with GAAP, OEM, and PE reporting requirements. Prepare and review consolidated and rooftop-level financial statements, balance sheet reconciliations, and departmental P&Ls. Ensure consistent revenue recognition and accounting treatment across all locations. Inventory, Cost & Margin Management Maintain accurate accounting for: New and used vehicle inventory across rooftops Parts inventory, obsolescence, and physical/cycle counts Warranty receivables, OEM incentives, and rebates Ensure proper accounting for: Vehicle gross and deal postings F&I income and chargebacks OEM programs, incentives, and holdbacks Partner with dealership leadership to analyze and improve: Gross profit by rooftop and department (Sales, F&I, Parts, Service) Labor efficiency, productivity, and absorption Parts margins and inventory turns Warranty recovery rates and aging Controls, Compliance & PE Reporting Design, implement, and enforce strong internal controls across all rooftops, including cash handling, inventory, contracts, and receivables.
Ensure compliance with:
Sales and use tax Payroll and employment tax requirements OEM financial statement submissions and audits Lender and floorplan reporting requirements Own PE-level reporting deliverables, including: Monthly financial reporting packages Variance analysis and KPI dashboards Audit readiness and data requests Covenant compliance and lender reporting Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, lenders, and OEM representatives. Systems, DMS & Scalability Own accounting systems and integrations with dealership DMS platforms and supporting systems. Ensure data integrity between DMS, payroll, floorplan lenders, OEM portals, and the general ledger. Drive process standardization and automation to support scalability and reduce manual effort. Support system implementations, upgrades, and integrations related to growth or acquisitions. Lead post-acquisition accounting integration and financial onboarding of new rooftops. Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnership Lead, develop, and mentor a multi-rooftop accounting team. Establish standardized accounting policies, procedures, and close calendars across the group. Partner closely with the CFO, Dealer Principals, General Managers, and department leaders to improve financial discipline and operational performance. Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and long-range financial modeling. Contribute to value creation initiatives, including margin improvement, cost control, and operational efficiencies.
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred). 7-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including people leadership. Direct experience in multi-rooftop automotive dealership accounting (franchise environment required). Strong understanding of dealership financial statements, inventory accounting, and floorplan financing. Experience operating in a private equity-backed and/or lender-driven reporting environment. Advanced knowledge of GAAP and internal controls. Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large transactional datasets.
Preferred:
Experience supporting dealership acquisitions and post-close integrations. Experience with dealership DMS platforms (e.g., CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds, Dealertrack). Familiarity with PE-level KPIs, dashboards, and reporting cadence. Experience working with OEM incentive programs across multiple brands.
