Job Description

About the Company A well-established and growing mechanical contracting company is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee all financial operations and reporting functions. The company has a long-standing reputation for excellence and specializes in plumbing, heating, cooling, and service operations across commercial and residential sectors. This role is ideal for a hands-on financial leader who values integrity, accountability, operational efficiency, and strong communication. The Controller will work closely with executive leadership and play a key role in guiding the company's financial health and long-term success. Position Summary The Controller will report directly to executive leadership and will be responsible for managing the company's accounting operations, financial reporting, payroll processes, cash flow management, and internal financial controls. This individual will also oversee a small accounting team and ensure accurate and timely financial operations across multiple business divisions. Key Responsibilities Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations including: Accounts Payable (AP) Accounts Receivable (AR) General Ledger (GL) Billing & Collections Job Cost Accounting Cash Management Financial Reporting Manage both union and non-union payroll processes accurately and in compliance with applicable regulations. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for executive leadership. Monitor company cash flow, budgets, forecasts, and financial performance metrics. Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and internal controls. Support project accounting and construction job costing activities. Coordinate with external CPAs, auditors, banks, and insurance providers as needed. Supervise and mentor accounting/office staff, fostering accountability and operational efficiency. Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices within accounting operations. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred. 5+ years of experience in accounting or financial management roles, preferably within construction, mechanical contracting, or related industries.
Strong experience with:
Construction accounting Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting Job costing Union payroll Financial reporting Cash flow management Proficiency with Vista/Viewpoint accounting software is highly preferred and considered a top priority for this role. Experience managing accounting teams and overseeing multi-function financial operations. Strong knowledge of accounting principles, internal controls, and construction financial practices. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other accounting/reporting systems. Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with leadership and operational teams. Preferred Experience Experience in mechanical contracting, HVAC, plumbing, or construction industries. Familiarity with union labor environments and prevailing wage payroll processes. CPA or advanced accounting certifications are a plus.
