Job Description
Description Robert Half Contracts Finance & Accounting division is seeking a part-time Controller to join a great construction and real estate firm. This is a temporary to hire position and would be on site 3 days a week.
The tasks would include:
Responsible for overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, and compliance activities for a privately held real estate development and general contracting company in Sacramento. This hands-on position manages the full financial cycle, with a strong emphasis on construction and project accounting, including job costing, property management accounting and multi-entity financial management. Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations- Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements (monthly, quarterly, and annual), including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules.
- Manage project accounting, including purchase order administration, job cost tracking, change orders, progress billings, retainage, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition for construction and development projects.
- Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including account reconciliations, variance analysis, and financial reviews with project managers and executives.
- Prepare consolidated financial reports for multiple entities (e.g., development entities---LP's, LLC's, Corp.'s, Sole Proprietor). Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
- Develop and maintain annual operating budgets, project budgets, and financial forecasts.
- Monitor project costs against budgets, analyze variances, and provide actionable insights to support profitability and cost control.
- Conduct financial analysis for new development opportunities, bids, change orders, and cash flow projections. Qualifications & Requirements
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.Experience:
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3-5 years as a Controller or Assistant Controller.
- Significant experience in real estate development, general contracting, or construction accounting (job cost, percentage-of-completion method essential). If you feel this is the job for you, apply today! Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- At least 7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including 3 to 5 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller capacity.
- Strong background in construction, general contracting, or real estate development accounting.
- Demonstrated expertise in job costing and percentage-of-completion accounting methods.
- Experience preparing financial statements, managing multi-entity reporting, and overseeing month-end and year-end close processes.
- Knowledge of tax compliance, internal controls, and financial risk management within a project-based business environment.
- Proficiency with accounting and property management platforms such as QuickBooks and Yardi.
- Ability to work onsite in Sacramento, California three days per week in a part-time schedule.
