Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Controller to provide financial leadership for a nonprofit organization in Sacramento, California. This Long-term Contract position will guide core accounting activities, deliver reliable financial reporting, and help leadership make informed budgeting and planning decisions. The role also plays a key part in maintaining compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and annual reporting obligations.
Responsibilities:
  • Direct daily accounting activities, including oversight of the general ledger, account reconciliations, and monthly and annual close processes.
  • Produce timely financial statements, leadership summaries, and board-level reporting that support operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Administer fund accounting practices by monitoring restricted and unrestricted resources and ensuring accurate classification of transactions.
  • Track grant-related financial activity, including budget performance, revenue recognition, and adherence to donor and funding requirements.
  • Strengthen and maintain internal control procedures to support accurate records and compliance with nonprofit accounting and tax regulations.
  • Coordinate the year-end audit by preparing schedules, responding to auditor requests, and supporting completion of required filings such as Form 990.
  • Contribute to budget preparation, financial forecasting, and cash flow analysis to support organizational stability and planning.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and related accounting functions to ensure efficient and accurate processing.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to provide financial insight, improve reporting processes, and support long-range financial strategy.
