Description:
We are seeking a dynamic, analytical, and detail-oriented Controller who can oversee core accounting operations while providing meaningful financial insight across a vertically integrated family of companies involved in surface mining, wholesale product sales, and trucking/logistics operations. This position offers the opportunity to take a visible leadership role in a privately held, multi-company operating environment with direct exposure to the CFO, executive leadership, and field managers. The successful candidate will be a hands-on accounting leader who can strengthen accounting discipline, improve reporting and cost visibility, support budgeting and forecasting, and provide practical financial insight that helps management understand profitability, costs, margins, and operating performance across multiple companies and locations. Key Responsibilities Prepare and review financial statements, management reporting packages, balance sheet reconciliations, supporting schedules, variance analysis, KPIs, budget-to-actual results, prior-year comparisons, and financial commentary. Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, cash management, inventory, fixed assets, and capital expenditures. Lead the accounting team through month-en d close, reporting deadlines, reconciliations, audits, and ongoing process improvements. Support the CFO with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, working capital management, financial modeling, and long-range planning. Analyze profitability, margins, cost per ton, product performance, customer performance, trucking lanes, production costs, labor costs, fuel costs, maintenance costs, and equipment utilization. Review inventory costing, product costing, overhead absorption, operating cost trends, and cost allocation methods to improve visibility into true profitability by company, location, product, and business segment. Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, approval procedures, and standard operating processes across the organization. Support year-end close, external accounting reviews, audits, tax preparation, and other financial reporting requirements. Lead, coach, and develop accounting team members while promoting accuracy, accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required. Minimum of 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience. Minimum of 3 to 5 years of supervisory or accounting leadership experience. Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, financial reporting, reconciliations, internal controls, budgeting, and financial analysis. Experience working in a multi-company, multi-location, or multi-division business environment. Strong proficiency with accounting systems, ERP systems (Great Plains), Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting tools. Demonstrated ability to close financial periods accurately and on time. Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively with both executive leaders and hands-on operational managers. Preferred Qualifications CPA, CMA, MBA, or advanced accounting/finance training preferred. Experience in surface mining, aggregates, construction materials, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, trucking, logistics, or related industries strongly preferred. Experience with cost accounting, inventory accounting, equipment/fixed asset accounting, and operational KPI reporting. Experience with process improvement, internal control development, and financial system optimization. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong technical accounting knowledge with practical business judgment. Ability to translate financial data into useful operational insight. Strong understanding of cost drivers in asset-intensive, equipment-heavy, and logistics-dependent businesses. High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, multi-site environment. Strong leadership skills with the ability to hold people accountable while building trust. Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial managers. Strong ethics, confidentiality, and professional judgment. Hands-on work style with the ability to operate strategically and tactically. Continuous improvement mindset with the ability to build better systems, controls, and reporting processes. Physical and Work Environment Requirements Primarily office-based role with occasional travel to mining operations, wholesale locations, trucking facilities, or other company sites. Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods. May occasionally be required to visit operational areas where PPE is required. Must be able to work additional hours as needed during month-end close, year-end close, budgeting, audits, or major business projects.
