This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial information while supporting operational leadership and physicians with financial insights to guide strategic decisions. The Controller partners closely with leadership, physicians, revenue cycle teams, and external advisors to manage financial performance, regulatory compliance, tax preparation, and operational initiatives. This position also plays a key role in evaluating new ventures, supporting practice growth, and ensuring efficient financial and revenue cycle processes across the organization. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Financial Accounting & Reporting Oversee the monthly financial close process, including review of financial statements, supporting schedules, and preparation of board reports. Analyze operational and financial dashboards to ensure revenue and expenses align with organizational expectations. Monitor and analyze key financial drivers including: Therapy and ancillary service performance Deductible trends Volume-to-revenue relationships for providers and service lines Medication and supply utilization Allocation methodologies across entities Conduct detailed financial analysis to investigate variances in revenue, expenses, or operational volumes. Assist in the preparation and review of physician compensation models and supporting financial schedules. Communicate quarterly financial results and earnings distributions to physicians and affiliated entities. Support preparation and review of entity valuation analyses across all affiliated entities. Provide annual income estimates to tax accountants and coordinate the annual tax preparation process. Compile and submit benchmarking data to industry organizations for financial and operational comparisons. Support physician partner buy-in and buy-out transactions, including tracking financial ramp-up periods. Operational Finance & Leadership Collaborate with department leaders to address financial questions and project-related needs. Participate in operational meetings to review outstanding issues such as claims processing, billing workflows, and financial performance. Communicate project updates and financial considerations to appropriate team members across departments. Strategic Projects & Business Initiatives Lead financial planning and implementation for new clinics, physicians, and service lines, ensuring all financial and revenue cycle components are addressed. Conduct financial feasibility analysis for new ventures, partnerships, and service expansions. Oversee the financial implementation of revenue cycle processes for new locations and services. Direct financial set-up and rollout of new operational systems and technologies to ensure smooth adoption. Provide tax planning and financial analysis for transactional events, including real estate or partnership transactions. Coordinate accounting and revenue cycle integration across affiliated entities. Payer & Contracting Support Assist leadership in payer contract negotiations and financial modeling for managed care agreements. Support operational transitions related to payer contracts, provider enrollment, and billing system updates. Ensure claims, authorizations, and billing processes reflect correct tax identification numbers, provider identifiers, and payer requirements. Monitor claims processing workflows and coordinate resolution of issues between payers, credentialing teams, and billing partners. Participate in recurring operational calls with billing vendors and internal leadership to address revenue cycle performance. Revenue Cycle Oversight Review payer contracts and financial implications of new agreements. Monitor healthcare regulatory changes and payer policy updates impacting orthopedic services. Review daily and weekly revenue cycle KPIs, including claims processing, collections, and reimbursement trends. Analyze accounts receivable reports to identify aging claims and coordinate appropriate follow-up actions. Generate financial and operational reports for physicians, executive leadership, and internal teams. Identify opportunities for reporting automation and process improvements. Payroll & Retirement Plan Administration Review biweekly payroll journals to ensure accuracy and compliance. Perform quarterly reconciliation of retirement plan deferral reports between plan administrators and payroll systems. Coordinate and support the annual 401(k) audit, preparing requested documentation and responding to auditor inquiries. Update physician 401K deferral, match and profit-sharing percentages and schedules annually. Participate in meetings with benefits brokers and assist with health insurance evaluation and claims review as needed. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration. Minimum 7-10 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience. Experience managing financial reporting and finance functions. Strong financial analysis and reporting skills. Advanced proficiency with financial systems, reporting tools, and Microsoft Excel. CPA designation strongly preferred. Healthcare or physician practice financial management experience, preferably within orthopedic or multi-entity practice environments. Experience with revenue cycle operations, payer contracting, and healthcare reimbursement models. Familiarity with 401(k) plan administration and audit support.
