Job Description

The Assistant Controller supports the financial management and accounting operations of the nonprofit organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, assisting with financial reporting, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and grant requirements, supporting audits, and helping oversee day-to-day accounting functions. The assistant controller plays a key role in safeguarding organizational assets and supporting the organization's mission through sound financial stewardship. Responsibilities -
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes
  • Maintain the general ledger and oversee accounting reconciliations
  • Prepare financial analyses, reports, and dashboards for leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Support budget preparation, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, including nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Monitor restricted and unrestricted funds and ensure proper accounting treatment.
  • Assist with grant accounting, tracking, expenditures, and preparing financial reports for funders.
  • Supports compliance with federal, state, and local regulations affecting nonprofit organizations.
  • Maintain internal controls and recommend process improvements
  • Oversees accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
  • Monitor cash flow and assist with cash management activities
  • Review and approve transactions, journal entries, and reconciliations.
  • Ensure timely deposits, vendor payments, and donor revenue recording. Leadership duties-
  • Provide guidance and support to finance staff
  • Assist in training and developing finance team members.
  • Promote adherence to accounting policies and procedures
  • Support cross-functional collaboration with development, programs, and operations teams. Requirements -
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 3 (+) years' progressive accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, and GAAP.
  • Experience financial statement preparation and audit support
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
