Through engaging programs, exhibits, and community events, AMM educates youth and adults about the rich maritime heritage of Annapolis and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay. Our mission comes to life across two waterfront campuses—on Back Creek and aboard our historic skipjack, Wilma Lee —through interactive experiences that inspire stewardship and celebrate local history.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park seeks an experienced finance professional to serve as its part-time Director of Finance & Administration. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the Director serves as the organization's senior financial leader, providing strategic financial guidance, oversight of accounting operations, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and administrative support. The Director will work closely with existing part-time accounting staff who perform day-to-day accounting and bookkeeping functions. This position is ideal for a seasoned nonprofit finance executive, former CFO, Finance Director, or Controller seeking meaningful mission-driven work in a flexible, part-time leadership role. The Director will play a key role in supporting the organization's continued growth, capital campaign initiatives, capital projects, grant compliance, and long-term financial sustainability. This is a full-time, on-site position that requires working occasional Saturdays, evenings and holidays.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Leadership and Oversight Serve as the primary financial advisor to the President & CEO. Oversee the organization's financial management systems and accounting processes. Supervise and support part-time accounting staff responsible for day-to-day accounting operations. Ensure timely and accurate monthly financial reporting. Review financial statements, balance sheets, cash flow reports, and budget-to-actual analyses. Monitor financial performance and communicate key trends and variances to leadership. Support long-term planning, growth initiatives, capital projects, and organizational sustainability. Oversee financial management and financial reporting related to grants and restricted funding. Prepare and present financial reports for the Board of Directors and Finance Committee. Budget Development & Monitoring Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with organizational leadership. Monitor departmental and program budgets throughout the year. Assist managers in understanding financial performance and resource allocation. Develop financial models and forecasts to support strategic initiatives. Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls Serve as the primary liaison to external auditors. Lead annual audit planning and review. Ensure the organization maintains sound internal controls and financial policies. Oversee compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and regulatory obligations. Support preparation of Form 990 and other required filings. Human Resources & Administration Oversee payroll, benefits administration, and HR compliance processes. Coordinate with payroll providers, benefits brokers, and external advisors. Support annual benefits renewals and employee enrollment processes. Assist leadership in maintaining sound personnel and administrative practices.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field. Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience. Significant nonprofit financial management experience. Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting, budgeting, internal controls, and financial reporting. Experience managing audits and grant compliance. Experience presenting financial information to executive leadership, boards, and finance committees. Proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel. Preferred CPA designation. Former CFO, Finance Director, or Controller experience. Experience with capital campaigns and capital project accounting. Experience with federal and state grants. Experience supporting human resources and benefits administration. Experience in nonprofit organizations with annual budgets between $2 million and $10 million. This is primarily an on-site position. Work will regularly take place outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions. Some evening and weekend availability is required.
