Job Description

Controller Metal Works Direct

  • $105,000-$120,000 Metal Works Direct is a structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication and erection company based in Lexington, SC.
We're growing, we're operationally focused, and we need a Controller who does more than close the books — someone who tracks job margins in real time and lives in the cash flow. The role covers finance, HR, and key vendor relationships. It's a broad seat at a small executive table, and the right person will have more impact here than they would managing a finance department twice the size.
FINANCIAL OPERATIONS
Own the full accounting cycle: GL, AP, AR, payroll, bank reconciliations, and month-end close within 10 business days Build and maintain a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast; present weekly with variance explanation Manage the line of credit — availability, covenant compliance, and utilization vs. backlog Prepare and deliver monthly financial packages: P&L, balance sheet, cash flow statement, and job margin summary Own all
WIP / CWIP
schedule preparation, over/under billing analysis, and revenue recognition Lead annual budget development with department heads and hold the team accountable to it monthly Liaise with external CPA on tax filings, year-end close, and any review engagements
OPERATIONAL FINANCE & JOB COSTING
Attend and contribute to weekly job review meetings with Operations — analyze margin performance by job, production zone, and project manager Track labor hours at the job level; flag labor inefficiency, scope creep, and margin erosion in real time Build and maintain a bid-to-actual job profitability database; surface estimating errors and production variances Analyze gross margins across fabrication and erection separately Own the weekly operations scorecard — backlog, bookings, cash vs. line, AR/DSO — every week without exception Review significant bids for financial risk before submission and provide a margin floor recommendation
LEADERSHIP & HOW WE OPERATE
Serve as a core member of the executive leadership team; contribute to weekly leadership meetings with issues, data, and decisions — not just reports Own the company Scorecard — design it, maintain it, drive accountability to the numbers Directly manage the
Assistant Accountant:
check-ins, task delegation, and development Drive adoption of AI tools and automation in financial workflows We operate on EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System). Prior experience is a plus, not a requirement.
HR & VENDOR RELATIONS
Oversee HR administration: employee files, onboarding/offboarding, benefit enrollment, workers' comp, payroll tax compliance, and handbook maintenance Serve as primary relationship owner for key vendors: steel suppliers, insurance brokers, bonding agent, and bank Negotiate payment terms, credit limits, and service agreements with strategic vendors Monitor certificate of insurance compliance for all subcontractors Manage the annual insurance renewal process — GL, property, umbrella, and workers' comp
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA preferred but not required 5-8+ years of progressive accounting experience with at least 3 years in a Controller or senior finance role Deep job cost accounting experience — fabrication, construction, manufacturing, or MEP strongly preferred Fluency in ERP systems: Sage, QuickBooks, Procore, or equivalent Experience with
WIP / CWIP
accounting and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition Prior experience managing or mentoring accounting staff Familiarity with EOS / Traction is a plus — but not required Proven track record deploying automation or AI tools to improve reporting speed and accuracy Experience managing HR administrative functions — benefit enrollment, payroll compliance, employee records Comfortable presenting financial data to non-financial stakeholders and translating numbers into operational decisions
Pay:
$105,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
