Job Description

Controller Morris County, NJ Status:
Full-Time ABOUT ArcMorris ArcMorris is a nonprofit human services organization that has supported individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Morris County, NJ, for over 70 years. Our mission is to empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to make meaningful choices, live independently, and thrive in their communities. Position Overview The Controller is a senior management position that supports key functions across the Finance, Accounting, and Payroll Units of ArcMorris. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller is responsible for managing day-to-day accounting operations, developing and enforcing financial policies and procedures consistent with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and maintaining the organization's financial integrity. This role oversees general accounting, investment accounting, tax compliance, budgeting, financial reporting, banking, payroll, benefits processing, and financial controls. The Controller is also expected to understand and ensure compliance with Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) guidelines. The Controller plays a key leadership role in strengthening financial systems, improving internal controls, and supporting executive leadership with accurate financial data for decision-making. Key Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):1. General Accounting & Reporting Develop, administer, and ensure compliance with GAAP-based accounting policies and procedures. Prepare interim financial statements and present findings to Executive Leadership. Maintain ledgers and accounting records; post journal entries. Update the chart of accounts, vendor listing, and accounting system reports. Reconcile financial information and accounts. Collect supporting documentation for vendor invoices and grant payments; ensure accuracy. Deposit cash receipts and post to the general ledger. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of GAAP through research, networking, and professional memberships. Network with accounting professionals to remain current on best practices. Consolidate all financial data for accurate reporting of organizational results. Evaluate internal control systems and accounting software for effectiveness. 2. Investment Accounting Post investment activity on a monthly/quarterly basis. Reconcile investment balances with custodial banks. Process capital calls and distribution wires. Report investment cash flows to the Finance Committee. 3. Audit & Tax Compliance Assist in preparing tax filings:
IRS 990PF, IRS 990T, NYS CT-13.
Calculate estimated excise tax payments. Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements affecting foundations/philanthropy. Prepare IRS Forms 1099 and 1096. Prepare audit schedules, financial statements, and notes for the annual audit; support auditors. 4. Budgeting Work with the Director of Finance to prepare annual capital and operating budgets. Assist in preparing cash flow projections. Conduct periodic budget vs. actual reviews with variance analysis. Track disbursements to meet minimum distribution requirements. Manage the full budgeting process. 5. Banking Ensure compliance with banking policies and procedures. Reconcile monthly bank statements, including custodian and petty cash accounts. Initiate interbank transfers as needed. 6. Processing Reconcile books/records to IRS Form 5500. Calculate and manage Section 457(b) transfers. Reconcile quarterly payroll tax returns to accounting records. 7. Additional Responsibilities Maintain inventory of offsite Foundation records and update inventory contracts. Support the Director of Finance with grantee financial statement reviews. Complete industry surveys as applicable. Train and retrain accounting staff. Provide management with financial information to support decision-making. Develop and monitor business performance metrics. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Dedication to the nonprofit sector; ability to exercise discretion, work independently, meet deadlines, and function as an effective team member. Minimum of 5 years of related accounting experience in a private foundation or public charity setting. Knowledge of nonprofit GAAP required. Familiarity with the Department of Developmental Disabilities is a plus. Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; CPA required . Proficiency with computerized accounting systems; strong MS Office skills, especially Excel. Experience with accounting software such as Great Plains preferred. Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize in a high-demand environment. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
