  • Full-time Controller Position Summary We are seeking a true hands-on Controller who will personally run the accounting function from start to finish.
This is not a high-level oversight role and not a position for someone who delegates the close process to others. The Controller must be capable of independently managing the day-to-day accounting operations, closing the books accurately every month, and producing complete and reliable financial statements without dependence on outside accountants. The ideal candidate is highly technical, detail-oriented, execution-driven, and fully comfortable working in the general ledger on a daily basis. This individual must have proven experience personally preparing monthly financial statements, reconciling accounts, booking journal entries, and ensuring the integrity of the financials across multiple entities. This role will oversee two staff accountants; however, the Controller is expected to personally own and drive the accounting process, not simply supervise it. Key Responsibilities Full Ownership of the Accounting Function Personally manage and maintain the general ledger and ensure all financial activity is accurately recorded. Independently close the books on a monthly basis and ensure timely issuance of complete financial statements. Prepare accurate monthly Balance Sheets, Income Statements, and Cash Flow Statements without outside assistance. Personally review and ensure completion of all reconciliations, including: Bank accounts Accounts receivable Accounts payable Inventory Accruals Prepaids Fixed assets Intercompany accounts All balance sheet accounts Prepare journal entries, accruals, schedules, and supporting workpapers. Ensure all accounting records are accurate, complete, and audit-ready at all times. Monthly Close & Financial Reporting Lead and execute the entire month-end close process from beginning to end. Produce timely and accurate monthly financial reporting packages for management. Perform detailed variance analysis and provide clear explanations of operating results. Ensure strict adherence to GAAP and internal accounting policies. Maintain organized supporting documentation for all reported balances. Hands-On Team Leadership Directly manage three staff accountants responsible for transaction processing and support functions. Review work for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness. Train and mentor accounting staff while maintaining accountability for deadlines and quality standards. Step in and perform accounting tasks directly when necessary to ensure deadlines are met. Systems, Processes & Internal Controls Utilize Microsoft Excel extensively, including advanced formulas, pivot tables, lookups, and financial analysis. Operate effectively within ERP/accounting systems and improve reporting efficiency where needed. Maintain and strengthen accounting procedures and internal controls. Ensure accounting processes support accurate and timely monthly closes. AP / AR / Cash Management Oversee accounts payable, receivable, expense processing, and cash applications. Monitor daily cash activity and coordinate banking transactions. Ensure vendor payments and independent contractor payments are processed accurately and timely. Budgeting & Financial Analysis Assist in preparing the annual operating budget and financial forecasts. Analyze monthly financial performance against budget and prior periods. Provide clear reporting and explanations of key financial variances. Compliance & Multi-Entity Accounting Prepare and file sales and use tax returns and other required filings. Ensure compliance with all accounting, tax, and regulatory requirements. Manage accounting across multiple entities, including consolidations and intercompany reconciliations. Coordinate annual audits and provide supporting documentation as required. Requirements Required Qualifications CPA required (active license strongly preferred). Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting experience. Proven experience independently managing and closing a full set of books. Demonstrated experience personally preparing monthly financial statements. Strong technical accounting and GAAP knowledge. Advanced Excel proficiency required. ERP/accounting system experience required. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Extremely detail-oriented with strong organizational and follow-through skills. High sense of ownership, accountability, and urgency. Preferred Qualifications Food industry experience strongly preferred. Experience in multi-entity accounting environments. Experience managing small accounting teams in a hands-on capacity.
