As Director of Finance, you will do more than oversee financial performance. You will help shape it. You will have a voice in executive decision-making, influence company strategy, strengthen accountability, and help build the financial foundation that supports sustainable growth and long-term community impact. Position Summary The Director of Finance serves as the senior financial leader of the organization and a key member of the Executive Leadership Team. This role is responsible for translating financial information into strategic business decisions that improve profitability, cash flow, operational performance, and long-term company value. This role goes beyond accounting. The Director of Finance will partner closely with the President, COO, Executive Team, Operations Team, and Business Development leaders to strengthen forecasting accuracy, improve project financial outcomes, enhance financial visibility, and support strategic decision-making across the organization. The successful candidate will possess deep construction industry financial expertise and understand the relationship between operations, project execution, risk management, cash flow, and financial performance. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable discussing project margins, WIP reporting, cash flow forecasts, banking relationships, operational performance, finance systems, and executive strategy. This individual views technology, automation, and process optimization as essential tools for improving financial visibility, accountability, and decision-making. A Rare Opportunity This position offers the opportunity to lead finance for both a growing commercial construction company and an expanding real estate development platform. Few organizations of this size provide exposure to construction operations, development finance, public incentives, workforce initiatives, banking relationships, surety relationships, and executive strategy within a single leadership role. The Director of Finance hired today will help architect the financial foundation, reporting discipline, team capability, and systems maturity required for USC Builds to continue growing with strength and clarity. Initial Priorities During the First Year Establish a disciplined and reliable 13-week cash forecasting process with documented assumptions and variance analysis. Improve visibility into project profitability, margin erosion, WIP accuracy, and financial risk. Implement executive KPI dashboards that support timely leadership decisions. Optimize Foundation reporting, finance workflows, and related systems integrations. Strengthen banking, surety, audit, and external reporting processes. Develop finance team capabilities, accountability, ownership, and reporting cadence. Become a trusted strategic advisor to the President and Executive Leadership Team. Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership Lead financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, and financial analysis activities. Develop and maintain rolling 13-week cash flow forecasts. Prepare monthly financial packages, executive dashboards, and variance analysis. Analyze financial performance against budget, forecast, backlog, and operational inputs. Identify financial risks and recommend corrective actions. Support strategic growth initiatives, capital planning, and business decision-making through financial analysis. Participate in Go/No-Go reviews, pricing discussions, capital investment decisions, and project risk reviews when appropriate. Construction Financial Management Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting and percentage of completion accounting. Review project profitability, earned revenue, margin trends, over/under billings, and contract status. Analyze labor productivity and project performance metrics from a financial perspective. Partner with the COO and Operations Team to improve project financial outcomes. Establish financial accountability measures across project teams, in coordination with Operations. Challenge project forecast assumptions and ensure financial reporting reflects operational reality. Cash Flow & Working Capital Management Manage company cash flow strategy and working capital planning. Monitor AR aging, collection efforts, retention collection, and billing progress. Improve Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) and support cash conversion strategies. Evaluate financing needs, cash constraints, and working capital requirements. Lead weekly cash review meetings and ensure clear visibility into short-term cash priorities. Operational Finance Develop KPI dashboards for gross profit, net profit, labor productivity, DSO, cash position, backlog, overhead recovery, forecast accuracy, and change order performance. Drive continuous improvement of financial processes, reporting systems, and reporting cadence. Ensure accurate job costing, cost coding, and data ownership practices. Translate financial data into actionable information for leadership, operations, project teams, and business development. Leadership & Team Development Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team. Establish performance expectations, accountability, and clear role ownership. Create cross-functional alignment between Finance, Operations, Business Development, and Executive Leadership. Support succession planning, team development, and a culture of accuracy, urgency, and service. Banking, Bonding & External Relationships Serve as primary financial contact for banks, sureties, external CPA firms, and insurance providers. Prepare financial presentations for lenders and bonding companies. Support annual audits, reviews, and external reporting requirements. Maintain strong relationships with financial partners and communicate USC Builds financial performance with credibility and clarity. Finance Systems, Reporting & Process Improvement Lead continuous improvement of financial systems, reporting processes, and finance-related workflows. Identify and implement practical automation opportunities that reduce manual financial processes and administrative burden. Partner with Operations and technology leaders to improve data flow between accounting, project management, payroll, HRIS, and operational reporting systems. Champion technology adoption, workflow optimization, business intelligence, AI-assisted reporting where practical, and integrated data systems that improve decision-making. Support implementation and optimization of Foundation Construction Accounting Software, project management platforms, payroll/HRIS systems, and business intelligence tools. Serve as the finance stakeholder in approved software selection, implementation, and optimization initiatives that impact job costing, billing, cash flow, profitability visibility, or reporting accuracy. Real Estate Development Support Provide financial oversight for development projects. Assist with project proformas, investment analysis, and financing opportunities. Support public incentive, grant, and compliance reporting requirements. Evaluate development-related financial risk, capital needs, and long-term value creation. QualificationsRequired Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field. 7+ years of progressive financial leadership experience. 5+ years in commercial construction, real estate development, or related industries. Strong understanding of WIP reporting, percentage of completion accounting, construction job costing, cash flow forecasting, financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting. Experience managing accounting or finance teams. Advanced Excel and financial reporting skills. Ability to translate financial data into clear operational and executive recommendations. Preferred CPA, CMA, MBA, or equivalent experience. Experience with Foundation Construction Accounting Software. Experience working with banks, sureties, external CPA firms, and insurance providers. Experience in commercial construction and self-perform trades. Real estate development finance experience. Experience improving financial reporting systems, dashboards, or finance-related process workflows. Working knowledge of workflow automation, systems integration, business intelligence, and data governance in a finance context. Key Performance Indicators Cash Flow Maintain rolling 13-week cash forecasts with documented assumptions and variance analysis. Improve DSO to less than 60 days. Improve billing, collection, and retention visibility. Profitability & Forecasting Deliver monthly project profitability reporting and margin erosion analysis. Deliver monthly forecast updates and variance analysis. Identify material risks to revenue, profitability, and cash flow in a timely manner. Provide actionable forecasting information supported by operational and business development inputs. Operational Performance Improve WIP accuracy and project financial issue resolution. Improve change order conversion, billing metrics, and financial accountability across project teams. Deliver monthly leadership dashboard by the 10th business day. Leadership & Systems Improvement Improve accounting department performance, team development, and retention. Develop and maintain executive KPI dashboard visibility into cash flow, backlog, WIP, gross profit, AR aging, DSO, labor productivity, and forecast accuracy. Reduce manual reporting and duplicate data entry where practical. Improve data consistency between accounting, payroll, project management, and operational reporting systems. Establish documented financial reporting standards, ownership, and periodic data integrity reviews. Compensation & Benefits Annual base salary: $150,000
  • 180,000, commensurate with experience.
Annual profit sharing when offered by the company. 70% employer-paid health, dental, and vision plan coverage up to $11,000 annually.
