Founded in 2006, Star House operates our nation's only drop-in center for teens and young adults experiencing homelessness that offers immediate access to safety and hosts continuous best practice research for effective service. Along with the Finance Fund and Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority, Star House operates the only housing village of its kind in Central Ohio for young people who are exiting homelessness. The organization met the unique needs of 1,528 individual young people in 2024, successfully connecting them with housing, jobs, education, health care, therapy, and a range of community resources. Star House's mission is to do whatever it takes to support young people as they exit homelessness and thrive in a community of hope. Our vision is to replicate our evidence-based model of service for youth nationally and globally, based on the demand for our services in other communities. We are seeking a Vice President of Finance & Controller who believes in our mission; embodies our values of unconditional care, doing whatever it takes as long as it takes and creating innovative solutions; and who can help us achieve our vision with development expertise.

Exempt, Salary Position Summary:
With an internist passion for the Star House mission, The VP of Finance will work closely with the President & CEO (CEO) to realize the long-range vision and related strategic plan for Star House. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to managing and continually enhancing our organization's financial performance and systems, direct accounting operations and financial forecasting. This leader is ultimately responsible for implementing and maintaining the appropriate financial and operating controls to safeguard assets and produce timely financial reports, as well as providing strong financial forecasting and related recommendations. The VP of Finance & Controller will work with the CEO to filter and translate vision into the functional financial plans of the organization, while advising on financial rigor and risk perspectives. Further, the individual has expert-level experience managing financials related to nonprofit operations, including public and private grants, and nonprofit capital building projects. Experience with housing development finances preferred.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
The following duties are representative of performance expectations; however, the list below is not ranked in order of importance.
  • Demonstrates personal commitment to Star House values
  • Oversee, direct and organize the work of all physical and financial assets
  • Provide leadership to finance department
  • Support and partner with the VP of Philanthropy and CEO on all major fundraising initiatives as well as grant oversight relative to the allocated funds
  • Oversee all grant financial management, including budgeting, compliance, tracking and reporting of restricted funds
  • Advise the CEO, Board and senior leadership on budgeting, cash flow, investment priorities and forecasting and report monthly on these initiatives
  • Identify and provide guidance/recommendation on appropriate financing alternatives
  • Prepares recurring, timely financial reports for the CEO, Finance Committee, Executive Committee and Full Board Meeting
  • Implements, maintains and monitors internal financial controls over transactions, projects and reporting
  • Facilitates the annual budgeting process and any necessary budget adjustments
  • Develop plans for financial growth
  • Evaluates and manages financial risk ongoing, equipping the CEO with the information necessary for informed decision-making
  • Coordinates annual audit processes, including managing external auditor relationships, preparing audit schedules, and ensuring timely completion and filing of Form 990
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, local and organizational laws, regulations, guidelines, best practices, including but not limited to tax laws and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Maintains knowledge of developments and trends in finance and administration including technological advances
  • Partner with the CEO on short- and long-range planning as it relates to finance, development and expansion
  • Help hold the leadership team accountable for achieving agreed-upon budgets
  • Resolves issues quickly and effectively— seeing issues, identifying assumptions and using good judgment always.
  • Abides by the organization's team covenant, promoting healthy conflict prevention/resolution and a sense of unity
  • Ensure that the team is following, and adhering to, the company's financial and IT core processes and operating system with consistency. Demonstrates effective project management and continuous improvement skills. Uses both skills to manage and evolve core processes
  • Translates new developments, such as replicated drop-in centers and housing programs, into functional financial plans for the company
  • Head IT relations and manage external technology partners

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in the area of Finance, Accounting and/or Business Administration
  • 8 years of experience within finance and accounting
  • Demonstrated, effective senior leadership experience
  • Proficient with Excel and QuickBooks (or other similar financial accounting system)
  • Demonstrated ability to summarize and report financial reports to senior leaders and board members
  • Has first-rate organizational proficiencies— respecting the organization's vision and the related goals and deadlines.
They are outcomes-oriented, promoting smart prioritization and predicting and proactively addressing issues
