Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in leading the accounting and financial reporting functions for a mid-sized, multi-site manufacturing company operating across multiple states. This position is responsible for supporting accurate and timely financial close activities, consolidated reporting, cost accounting, inventory and fixed asset accounting, internal controls, budgeting and forecasting, and financial analysis. The role partners closely with plant leadership, operations, supply chain, and corporate teams to provide meaningful financial insight, strengthen accounting processes, ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies, and support sound business decision-making across all locations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Leads and coordinates monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities across multiple manufacturing locations, including journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, intercompany activity, and financial reporting deadlines.
  • Reviews and analyzes site-level financial results, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow activity, working capital, and key manufacturing performance indicators to ensure accuracy, consistency, and timely reporting.
  • Supports the Controller in preparing consolidated financial statements, management reports, variance analyses, and financial commentary for leadership across multiple sites and states.
  • Oversees cost accounting activities for manufacturing operations, including standard costing, product costing, labor and overhead absorption, margin analysis, production variances, and inventory valuation.
  • Manages inventory accounting processes, including cycle count support, physical inventory planning, work in process review, reserve analysis for excess and obsolete inventory, and reconciliation of inventory subledgers to the general ledger.
  • Oversees fixed asset accounting, including capital project tracking, capitalization, transfers, disposals, depreciation, construction-in-progress reviews, and related analysis for equipment and facility investments.
  • Assists with budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning by partnering with plant leadership, operations, supply chain, and corporate finance to evaluate revenue, cost, labor, overhead, capital spending, and profitability trends.
  • Develops, monitors, and reports operational and financial KPIs, including margin variance, inventory turns, labor efficiency, scrap, overhead absorption, liquidity, working capital, and other site-specific performance measures.
  • Provides financial insight and decision support to identify cost savings opportunities, improve operational efficiency, strengthen profitability, and support consistent financial practices across locations.
  • Maintains and strengthens internal controls over financial reporting, inventory, fixed assets, accounts payable, purchasing, and other accounting processes across multi-state operations.
  • Ensures accounting practices comply with GAAP, company policies, internal control requirements, applicable tax and regulatory requirements, and established reporting standards.
  • Supervises accounting and accounts payable personnel as assigned, including hiring support, training, coaching, workload planning, performance feedback, process guidance, and issue resolution.
  • Supports accounts payable, purchasing, and expense management processes by ensuring proper approvals, coding, documentation, vendor support, and timely resolution of discrepancies.
  • Coordinates audit preparation and response activities, including gathering supporting documentation, reviewing schedules, addressing auditor requests, and supporting internal and external audit requirements.
  • Participates in physical inventories, cycle count reviews, and operational audits, including planning, execution support, reconciliation, and follow-up on count variances or control findings.
  • Partners with operations and corporate teams to improve accounting processes, standardize procedures, enhance reporting accuracy, and support ERP, data, and system improvement initiatives.
  • Prepares ad hoc financial analyses and supports special projects related to manufacturing performance, cost reduction, capital investments, customer profitability, pricing, and business decision support.
  • Understands and supports the company's quality policy and applicable Quality Management Systems, including
ISO 9001
2015 and
IATF 16949
where applicable.
  • Establishes and maintains effective professional working relationships with co-workers, site leadership, corporate personnel, vendors, auditors, and all levels of management.
  • Performs all other related duties and assignments as required.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting
  • Minimum 7 years of accounting experience within a manufacturing, warehouse, or inventory environment required
  • Experience with cost accounting, inventory valuation, and costing required
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
CPA certification is a plus but not required
COMPUTER SKILLS
  • Proficient with
MS Office:
Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook
  • Strong Excel ability, including a strong comfort level with v-lookups, pivot tables, sumifs, and nested IF formulas
  • Experience with data software is a plus
  • Familiarity with accounting software and programs
  • Experience working within ERP systems with inventory

  • Strong proficiency in GAAP, cost accounting, financial reporting, and relevant accounting software
  • Experience closing books in a timely fashion
