Controller 3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars Enola, PA 17025 Central Penn College 39 reviews Position Summary The Controller will provide high-level support to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on matters related to financial management and business operations. The Controller oversees the College's accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, while ensuring accurate and timely financial statements, managing budgets and financial forecasts to support strategic financial decision-making. Organization Role This is an advanced mid-level management position, reporting directly to the CFO. The Controller has supervisory responsibility over the Business Office staff, overseeing all activities of the Business Office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Accounting Operations and Financial Reporting:
Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts payable, miscellaneous accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger (fixed assets, cash, inventory, student loan, project accounting). Perform and review monthly and quarterly accounting closings ensuring completeness and accuracy. Supervise student accounts and cash applications functions, to include student refunds, IRS 1098-Ts, tuition payment plans, and delinquent accounts negotiation. Oversee Title IV funding to maintain compliance.Budgeting and Forecasting:
Assist the CFO in developing the College's annual budget and manage the budget and financial forecasts, providing insights into financial performance and future prospects, while aligning with the Strategic Plan. Evaluate ROI on all new programs and initiatives. Provide ad hoc reports to senior leadership as requested.Financial Reporting:
Prepare and review financial statements, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), U.S. Department of Education (USDE), Pennsylvania Department of Education (PA DOE), and other relevant regulations.Financial Analysis:
Analyze financial data to identify trends, support strategic decision-making, and recommend improvements. Monitor comparative financial and management reports, investigating large variances from the budget to effectively communicate the variances to senior leadership.Internal Controls:
Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard College assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.Compliance:
Ensure compliance with all applicable accounting standards, tax laws, and financial regulations.Audit Coordination:
Manage and coordinate internal and external audits, providing necessary information and ensuring timely completion. Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)Accounting:
Manage all aspects of ESOP accounting, including tracking contributions and disbursements, preparing annual schedules for the actuary, and coordinating the distribution of participant statements and payouts.Team Management:
Supervise and mentor the Business Office team, providing guidance and development opportunities. Instruct staff on accounting-related issues and new directives from USDE, MSCHE, NACUBO, and PA DOE. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of government funding regulations, financial aid compliance, payroll laws, and audit procedures to ensure institutional adherence to applicable policies and standards.Collaboration:
Collaborate with other departments and senior leadership to ensure financial alignment with business objectives. Foster a collaborative, team-oriented work environment that encourages open communication and mutual support. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field is required; Master's degree preferred. At least 5 years of progressive experience in accounting, budgeting, strategic planning, financial management, and/or administrative management within a complex, service-oriented for-profit organization. Experience in post-secondary education is a plus. Experience with cloud-based accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct, NetSuite, etc.) is a plus. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster collaboration across departments, with senior leadership, and with external partners including vendors, contractors, and auditors. Experience with ESOP procedures and processes is a plus. Proven experience in managing staff with varying skill levels. Advanced analytical and problem-solving abilities. Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong planning and time management skills. Demonstrated ownership mentality and enthusiasm for contributing to an employee-owned company culture. Working Conditions Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required for occasional local or regional travel. Must be able to occasionally lift and move items weighing up to 20 lbs. Position requires prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer. This role is based on campus and requires regular in-person attendance. Occasional remote work may be permitted at the discretion of the CFO based on operational needs.Note:
