State Director About Child Evangelism Fellowship of Virginia Child Evangelism Fellowship of Virginia (CEF of VA) is a statewide Christian nonprofit ministry dedicated to reaching children with the Gospel and equipping believers to disciple them. We operate through a statewide office and multiple local chapters, partnering with churches, volunteers, and community leaders. As a religious organization, CEF hires individuals who align with and support our Christian mission and Statement of Faith. Position Summary CEF of Virginia is seeking a ministryaligned, highly skilled Controller to serve as the organizations primary financial leader. This newly established role provides strategic financial oversight, strengthens internal controls, modernizes financial systems, and ensures excellence in nonprofit financial stewardship across both the state office and local chapters. This position is ideal for a selfstarter who thrives in a missiondriven environment, enjoys building processes, and can operate independently while advising leadership on financial strategy. Key Responsibilities Financial Operations & Accounting Establish and oversee financial policies, revenue recognition, donor receipting, and classification Strengthen internal controls and ensure accuracy of the general ledger Oversee interentity financial activity and chapterlevel financial consistency Ensure accurate tracking of deputized fundraiser balances in alignment with donor intent Month-End Close & Reporting Direct monthend close and ensure completeness of financial activity Prepare and analyze financial statements and budgettoactual reports Present financial results to the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Board Lead consolidated reporting across chapters Banking & Cash Management Manage banking relationships and cash management strategy Establish internal controls for cash handling, transfers, and credit card administration Advise on investment activity and financial risk Payroll & Benefits Administration Oversee payroll processes and compliance Review payroll reports and ensure proper accounting Support retirement plan administration (GuideStone) Budgeting & Financial Planning Lead annual budgeting and financial planning Develop financial projections and assumptions Monitor budget performance and advise leadership Regulatory Compliance Oversee Form 990 preparation and Virginia state filings Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations and CEF USA requirements Oversee 1099 reporting, sales tax filings, and documentation Board & Committee Support Prepare financial reporting packages for Board meetings Provide financial insights and recommendations Participate in Finance Committee meetings Chapter Support & Oversight Provide financial leadership to chapter treasurers Promote consistency in financial practices across chapters Support onboarding of new treasurers Systems & Process Improvement Lead development of financial systems, processes, and internal controls Advise on donor CRM implementation and integration with accounting systems Ensure proper documentation and record retention
Qualifications Required:
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field 510+ years progressive accounting experience (nonprofit preferred) Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls Proficiency in QuickBooks and Excel Ability to work independently and build processes from the ground up
Preferred:
Experience in a faithbased or religious nonprofit Familiarity with donor management/CRM systems Experience with multientity or chapterbased organizations Knowledge of payroll systems (e.g., ADP) CPA or equivalent credential Key Competencies Initiative and ownership mindset Strategic financial leadership Strong analytical and problemsolving skills Excellent communication with nonfinancial stakeholders Process development and continuous improvement Work Environment Hybrid schedule (23 days onsite in Richmond, VA) Flexible parttime hours Attendance at Board and Finance Committee meetings as needed Occasional instate travel Mission Alignment Requirement Because CEF is a Christian ministry, employment requires agreement with and support of the CEF Statement of Faith and the Ministry Compliance Agreement (MCA) . Candidates must be able to affirm and uphold CEFs Christian beliefs in the performance of their duties.
