About Special Love Special Love is a nonprofit organization based in Winchester, Virginia that creates a supportive and nurturing community for children with cancer and their families through free camps, getaway weekends, emergency financial assistance, educational scholarships, and year-round programs. Position Summary The Director of Finance & Administration is a key member of Special Love's leadership team and is responsible for overseeing the organization's financial management, human resources administration, risk management, and administrative operations. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this position works closely with the Executive Director, Board Treasurer, Finance Committee, auditors, and external vendors to ensure strong financial stewardship and effective organizational operations. The Director also supervises the Administrative & Finance Coordinator. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, mission-driven leader who enjoys working in a small nonprofit environment and is comfortable balancing strategic planning with hands-on execution. Work Location This position is based in Winchester, Virginia and is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Regular in-person attendance is required for staff meetings, board meetings, audits, organizational events, and other business needs. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Key Responsibilities Finance & Accounting Lead the annual budgeting process, financial forecasting, and ongoing financial analysis. Prepare monthly financial reports for leadership and quarterly reports for the Board of Directors. Oversee accounting systems, internal controls, cash management, investments, and restricted funds. Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations. Manage the annual audit process, Form 990 preparation, and relationships with auditors and financial service providers. Continuously evaluate and improve financial processes and systems. Human Resources & Administration Oversee onboarding, offboarding, employee benefits administration, retirement plan administration, and HR compliance. Manage relationships with benefits providers, insurance brokers, and other professional service vendors. Supervise the Administrative & Finance Coordinator and support their professional development. Oversee background screening processes for employees and volunteers. Leadership & Operations Partner with the Executive Director and Board Treasurer on financial strategy and organizational planning. Oversee organizational insurance and risk management activities. Coordinate with outsourced technology providers to support organizational needs. Participate in organizational initiatives, events, and special projects as needed. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required. Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in finance or accounting. Nonprofit experience required. CPA or related professional certification preferred. Experience with budgeting, audits, cash management, financial reporting, and internal controls. Knowledge of human resources administration and employee benefits preferred. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Experience supervising staff and managing external vendors. Proficiency with QuickBooks Online preferred. Compensation & Benefits Salary range: $110,000 - $130,000, commensurate with experience.
