POSITION SUMMARY
For nearly 50 years, the District of Columbia Hospital Association (DCHA) has worked to advance the missions of the hospitals and health systems of the District of Columbia by promoting policies and initiatives that strengthen the system of care, preserve access, and promote better health outcomes for the patients and communities they serve. The Vice President, Community Investment Programs (VP) is a senior executive leader charged with shaping and driving the impact of DCHA's community investment strategy. Partnering closely with the CEO, the VP plays a pivotal role in advancing the organization's social impact agenda and positioning DCHA as a leader in building healthier, more equitable communities. The VP leads bold, forward-looking strategies to address Washington, DC's most pressing health care needs by directing investments into high-impact priority areas. As the steward of DCHA's community investment portfolio, the Vice President ensures that grantmaking, partnerships, and initiatives are aligned with DCHA's strategic priorities and deliver measurable, sustainable improvements in community health and advance health equity. A skilled collaborator and communicator, the VP translates a bold vision for community impact into actionable, data-informed strategies. The VP serves as the accountable executive, supporting the nonprofit governing board, working closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, DCHA staff, and community stakeholders ensuring strong governance, strategic alignment, and effective decision-making. The VP also leads staff and ensures effective communication, coordination, and engagement with DCHA leadership and teams. Additionally, the VP helps position DCHA as a trusted thought leader and voice, leveraging research, data, and community insights to inform investments, shape strategy, and elevate the role of District hospitals as essential partners in building healthier communities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership & Stewardship Lead the vision, strategy, and stewardship of DCHA's community investment portfolio, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and community needs. Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and Board on community investment trends, health equity, and system-level impact opportunities. Position DCHA as a regional and national thought leader in community investment, hospital-community partnerships, and population health. Develop multi-year strategies that advance healthy communities and strengthen the role of hospitals as anchor institutions. Community Investment & Grantmaking Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of grantmaking programs and funding strategies, ensuring transparency, equity, and measurable impact. Ensure effective stewardship and accountability of all community investments, including grants, partnerships, and collaborative funding initiatives. Identify and advance high-impact funding opportunities that address health disparities and social drivers of health. Cultivate partnerships with local, regional, and national funders to amplify DCHA's investments and impact. Research, Data & Thought Leadership Lead the development of DCHA as a trusted data source and knowledge hub on community health needs and investment impact. Oversee community needs assessments, research initiatives, and data analytics to inform investment strategy and public policy. Translate complex data into clear, compelling insights and narratives for stakeholders, policymakers, and the public. Establish and track key performance indicators and social return on investment metrics to evaluate impact and drive continuous improvement. Community Engagement & Partnerships Build and sustain strong relationships with hospitals, community-based organizations, government agencies, and civic leaders. Serve as a senior representative of DCHA in coalitions, collaborations, and public forums advancing shared community priorities. Identify and foster cross-sector partnerships that strengthen community health and economic mobility. Elevate the voice and role of hospitals as essential community partners and drivers of local well-being. Team Leadership & Operations Lead and develop a high-performing team responsible for community investment strategy, grantmaking, and partner engagement. Oversee departmental operations, including budgeting, resource allocation, and program execution. Foster a culture of equity, collaboration, learning, and accountability. Ensure alignment and collaboration across DCHA departments, including policy, communications, and member engagement. Create and maintain a data source to support community investment reporting for obligations under District law in collaboration with the VP, Public Policy & External Affairs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience Minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in community investment, philanthropy, public health, nonprofit management, or related fields. Demonstrated experience managing grantmaking portfolios and community investment strategies with measurable outcomes. Strong understanding of health systems, health equity, and social drivers of health, particularly in urban communities. Proven success in cross-sector partnership development and stakeholder engagement. Experience leveraging data, research, and evaluation to inform strategy and decision-making. Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The physical demands and work environment described below represent the activities and surroundings of the positions. This position is hybrid (in-office/telework) and is required to report to the office a minimum of at least 50% per pay period with in-person presence. The position requires the employee to have an adequate off-site office environment for remote work. The work is typically performed in an office environment, with a moderate noise level. The position requires working in an office environment with the usual office equipment, including copiers, and computers. The employee is frequently required to talk and hear on the telephone and in person with individuals and groups. The incumbent may carry materials/equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. on occasion. The incumbent is required to read and respond to documents in hard copy and electronic form. The position requires occasional travel to member facilities and meetings requiring transportation.
SALARY RANGE
$160,000 to $200,000
