Controller Position Overview We are seeking a highly capable and self-directed Controller to lead all financial operations for our growing civil engineering firm. This individual will serve as the sole accounting and finance professional, responsible for overseeing the full spectrum of financial management, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, cash flow, and strategic financial support.

The ideal candidate is both hands-on and strategic—comfortable managing day-to-day accounting tasks while providing insights to support project profitability and company growth.

Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management & ReportingMaintain accurate and timely financial records in accordance with GAAPPrepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statementsLead month-end and year-end close processesDevelop and maintain financial forecasts, budgets, and variance analysesProvide financial insights and recommendations to leadershipProject Accounting & Job CostingTrack and analyze project costs, labor utilization, and profitabilityWork closely with project managers to monitor budgets and contract performanceManage revenue recognition (including percentage-of-completion methods where applicable)Ensure accurate job costing and reporting across multiple projectsAccounts Payable & ReceivableOversee invoicing, collections, and client billing processesManage vendor payments and maintain strong vendor relationshipsMonitor cash flow and working capital to ensure operational stabilityPayroll & ComplianceProcess payroll or oversee third-party payroll providersEnsure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulationsManage sales/use tax, payroll tax, and other filingsCoordinate with external CPA firm for tax preparation and auditsSystems & Process ImprovementMaintain and optimize accounting and project management systemsDevelop and document internal controls and financial proceduresIdentify opportunities for efficiency and automationStrategic SupportPartner with leadership on financial planning, pricing, and growth strategySupport business decisions with financial modeling and analysisAssist with contract review from a financial risk perspective
