Job Description

Finance Controller (Construction / Design‑Build)Position OverviewThe Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations for a design‑build construction organization. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and effective cash flow management. The Controller partners closely with executive leadership and project teams to support profitability, job cost accuracy, and strategic decision‑making in a project‑driven environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesManage daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assetsLead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial statementsDevelop and maintain job costing systems to track project performance, budgets, and profitabilityReview and analyze work‑in‑progress (WIP) schedules, including percentage‑of‑completion accounting and revenue recognitionPrepare and present financial reports, forecasts, and variance analyses for executive leadershipEnsure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulationsEstablish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial integrityOversee cash flow management, including forecasting, banking relationships, and credit facilitiesCoordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and other financial consultantsSupport budgeting and long‑term strategic planning initiativesPartner with project managers to monitor financial health of projects and proactively address cost overruns or risksLead, mentor, and develop accounting staff, fostering accountability and continuous improvementEducation & ExperienceBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA preferred4-7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership roleConstruction industry experience strongly preferredStrong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and construction revenue recognition methodsProficiency with accounting and construction management systemsAdvanced Microsoft Excel skillsStrong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving abilitiesAbility to clearly communicate financial information to non‑financial stakeholdersSkills & CompetenciesStrong financial acumen and attention to detailLeadership and team development capabilityStrategic mindset with a business‑partner approachHigh integrity and sound judgmentProcess improvement and efficiency focusReliability and a high level of trustworthinessExcellent organizational and time‑management skillsAbility to thrive in a fast‑paced environmentPhysical Requirements & Work EnvironmentProlonged periods of sitting and working at a computerAbility to sit, stand, and walk as neededOccasional lifting or carrying of items up to 15 lbsAbility to see, hear, speak, and write clearly to communicate effectivelyOffice environment with low to moderate noise levels
