Job Description

Description:
Client is a Texas-based civil contractor specializing in roadway construction, flatwork, storm drainage, and flagging for TXDOT and municipal clients across Central Texas. As a certified DBE/HUB firm, we bring a strong commitment to quality, compliance, and community to every project.
Role:
We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to lead the accounting department and serve as the financial backbone of our construction operations. This is a high-impact, hands-on leadership role reporting directly to the VP
  • Company Financial Manager and working closely with our Fractional CFO, Project Managers, and Operations leaders. The right person connects field activity to financial results
  • ensuring that job costs, WIP, billing, margins, certified payroll, and reporting are accurate, timely, and actionable.
You will also oversee accounting for two small, affiliated entities in addition to the primary construction entity.
Reporting Structure:
Reports to: VP
  • Company Financial Manager.
Works closely with:
Fractional CFO, Project Managers, Operations Managers. Maintain accurate cost reports for every active job showing budget, cost to date, remaining cost, and expected final cost. Conduct weekly job reviews comparing actual cost against budget and identifying overruns before they become critical. Calculate and communicate expected final margin per job
  • explain variances clearly to leadership. Monitor labor, material, equipment, and subcontract costs closely to catch cost overruns early. Prepare WIP schedule
  • track over/under billing, revenue adjustments, and cost to complete. Support Project Managers with financial analysis, forecasting, and corrective action on troubled jobs. Lead and manage the accounting team. Close the books accurately and on time
  • no later than 5 working days after month end.
Prepare accurate monthly P&L clearly tied to job performance. Deliver weekly, monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc financial reports for Project Managers and ownership. Maintain internal controls, reconciliations, and accounting discipline across all entities. Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing accuracy. Review all pay applications and billing to confirm the company is billing correctly for work completed. Oversee certified payroll processing and weekly CPR submissions for prevailing wage TXDOT and municipal contracts. Ensure DBE/HUB subcontractor utilization is accurately tracked and reported per contract requirements. Support workers comp audits, insurance renewals, and compliance documentation. Manage multi-entity accounting across the primary contractor and two affiliated entities. Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process across the company and by department. Prepare and maintain financial packages for bonding, surety, and banking relationships. Support the VP and Fractional CFO with financial analysis for strategic decision-making. Turn complex financial data into clear, simple insights that leadership can act on. Help implement and enforce check and balances. Help implement and enforce new systems.
Required:
Minimum 5 years of Controller experience specifically in civil construction at companies doing $50M or more in annual revenue. Minimum 3 years hands-on experience with Spectrum by Viewpoint
  • required, not preferred. Proven experience in job costing, cost control, WIP reporting, revenue recognition, and margin tracking in a civil construction environment. TXDOT or municipal contract experience
  • certified payroll (Davis-Bacon), weekly CPR submissions, prevailing wage compliance. DBE/HUB subcontractor compliance and utilization reporting experience. Experience preparing bonding and surety financial packages. Multi-entity accounting experience. Strong experience in Heavy Job or similar field management system. Advanced Excel skills

Proven ability to work directly with Project Managers and Operations teams to connect field activity with financial results. Strong understanding of labor productivity, earned vs. burned, cost to complete, and job profitability analysis. Ability to identify financial risks early, challenge weak forecasts, and drive corrective action. High accuracy, strong ownership, and comfort working in a fast-moving field construction environment.
Preferred:
Experience with HCSS Heavy Job. Texas civil construction background
  • road, drainage, flatwork, or municipal infrastructure.
CPA or CMA designation.
