JOB OVERVIEW
The Director of Finance is a strategic business partner responsible for leading the full spectrum of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) and Accounting for a $100M business unit within a larger corporate structure. This leader oversees financial operations, ensures compliance with corporate policies, drives operational performance, and provides insights that influence strategic decision‑making.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the primary financial advisor to the Business Unit Leader and executive stakeholders. Develop and execute financial strategies aligned with corporate objectives and business growth targets. Drive long‑range planning, annual budgeting, and monthly forecasting processes. Present financial results, risks, and opportunities to senior leadership. Own all FP&A activities including forecasting, cost modeling, margin analysis, and scenario planning. Provide insights on business trends, customer behaviors, and profitability drivers. Lead monthly performance reviews and variance analysis. Partner cross‑functionally with Sales, Operations, Supply Chain, and Product teams. Oversee business unit accounting activities ensuring compliance with GAAP and corporate policies. Partner with corporate accounting on close, accruals, reconciliations, and reporting. Ensure accurate revenue recognition, inventory accounting, and COGS reporting. Support internal and external audit activities. Collaborate with Operations and Supply Chain to optimize working capital and operational efficiency. Lead financial governance for commercial programs, pricing and customer agreements. Evaluate business unit performance and recommend profitability improvements. Manage and develop a high performing finance team. Foster a positive culture of accountability, analytical rigor, and continuous improvement.
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Deep experience leading FP&A and accounting for a $50M - $150M P&L within a corporate structure, with strong command of GAAP, revenue recognition, inventory accounting and internal controls. Expertise in long range planning, budgeting, forecasting, scenario modeling, margin analysis, and translating complex financial data into clear actionable business insights. Proven ability to serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership while developing high performing teams and driving accountability and continuous improvement.
GENERAL SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
High business acumen and analytical rigor. Excellent Excel skills and the ability to work with multiple systems (finance reporting, general ledger and data warehouse) Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong cross-functional relationships. Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach to problem-solving and the ability to balance short-term needs with long-term goals. Demonstrated commitment to accuracy, integrity, and financial stewardship.
MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE
12+ years of progressive experience in Finance or Accounting with 6 years of managing people. Experience supporting a $50M - $150M P&L in a corporate environment. Prior experience working in a regulated environment
PREFERRED EDUCATION
Typically, a bachelor's degree or global equivalent in Finance, Accounting or related field. MBA or CPA preferred.
TRAVEL / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Travel can be as much as 10%. Office environment. No special physical demands are required.
COMPLEXITY
Work on complex, numerous and unique issues of significant scope and financial impact where analysis of situations or data requires in-depth knowledge of the company and an evaluation of intangibles. Knowledge of all areas within sub-function(s) derived from experience in non-management and middle-management roles allowing for innovative concepts and promoting new ideas within the function.
STRATEGY
Participate in establishing the strategic direction to ensure alignment with overall Company strategy and initiatives. Focus may be on the execution of large and/or complex processes. Translate and guide team to implement strategy.
SUPERVISION
Direct and control activities through managers or senior professional level staff who have responsibility for the operation of the assigned area and/or process or system.
INTERACTION
Regularly interact with executives and/or major customers/stakeholders. Ability to negotiate with suppliers or management and influence senior level leaders regarding matters of significance.
SCOPE:
Typically direct a large complex section of a department or a complex department with significant scope and financial and operational impact. Role may focus on executing a large and very complex/complicated process. Accountable for performance, results and staffing. Make recommendations for the objectives, policies and plans of the sub-function(s). Fully accountable for meeting the strategic and operating objectives of the sub-function(s). Develop proposed budgets for approval and manage budget once approved. Operate with substantial latitude for un-reviewed action or decision. Often plays a role in high-level projects that have an impact on the company's future direction.
MANAGEMENT DUTIES
Can hire, terminate, or promote and is aware of higher-level functional issues and concerns. Makes decisions on salary increases, performance reviews, disciplinary actions, etc.
