JOB SUMMARY

: Assist in the enforcement of Town Fire Prevention Codes through the review of new building plans for fire safety compliance and the coordination of fire prevention activities with local agencies. The Full-Time Fire Marshal shall also assist in the daily operations of the Bureau of Building and Zoning Enforcement to ensure that all construction complies with all New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Codes and Town Building Codes as well as to ensure compliance with Town zoning laws and ordinances, and other applicable laws.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Inspect public/commercial buildings, issue violation notices, and ensure adherence to New York State fire codes and Local Laws. Inspect sprinkler and fire alarm systems for compliance with NYS Fire Prevention and Building Codes. Assists Code Enforcement Officers (CEO's) in review of building plans for fire safety compliance in new construction and fire equipment installations. Prepare detailed reports, maintain records, and perform related technical/investigative tasks. Document fire hazards identified during inspections through photographs and written reports. Investigate complaints relating to zoning violations; prepare correspondence requiring corrective action and perform follow-up inspections to ensure compliance. Maintain current knowledge of applicable building and fire prevention codes and town zoning laws and ordinances.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

WORK IMPACT

It is essential that the Full-Time Fire Marshal be knowledgeable of the appropriate fire prevention codes, building codes and Town zoning laws and ordinances that affect the residents of the Town of Malta. Enforcement of these regulations - and ensuring the safety of residents who occupy or utilize these structures - is a core responsibility of the Building and Planning Department and this position.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Ability to perform activities including climbing, stooping, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors. Environmental conditions will vary and may include exposure to temperature extremes, noise, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, scaffolding and elevated surfaces, high heat, and chemicals.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS

(a) One (1) year of experience as a Fire Inspector; or (b) One (1) year of experience as a certified Building Safety Inspector (BSI); or (c) Three (3) years of paid experience as a firefighter; or (d) Six (6) years of experience as a volunteer firefighter, at least two years of which must have been in a line officer position; or (e) An equivalent combination of training and experience as outlined above. Must obtain New York State Building Safety Inspection (BSI) certification. Required to have a New York State Driver's license and subject to routine drug and alcohol screening.
