Job Description

This person is responsible for overseeing all aspects of member fitness programming, events and staff with a focus on member experience. Responsible for department revenue goals, member intake and integration, service and retention, program variety/participation, and department expense management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Oversee all aspects of operations, strategy, planning and staffing for fitness and personal training departments. Develop and implement department operating procedures, with quality measures and controls. Develop and implement new member integration process, including intake, assessment, testing, orientation and tune-ups. Develop effective member programs, workshops and events. Hold monthly department meetings with minutes and clear action points. Recruit, hire, train, develop, and evaluate all fitness and personal training staff. Coordinate and manage and participate in the M.O.D. program. Develop monthly plan for achieving all benchmarks. Develop monthly plan for achieving revenue goals with accountability for all department members. Consistently maintain expense control measures for the department, with careful attention to scheduling, payroll, and personal training commissions. Submit weekly payroll in a timely manner. Assemble and authorize payroll documents with back up for fitness. Provide daily, weekly, and monthly reports to track trending and needs. Keep all equipment clean and in good operating order. Establish staff minimum criteria, and performance standards and expectations. Institute department inventory controls and expense management system. Provide leadership, support, motivation, and correction for fitness, aquatics, sports and recreation, program, and personal training staffs, with cross training for all departments as necessary. Perform daily department walk through with relevant action points. Develop member usage and retention action plans. Participate on retention committee. Manage tracking of new member integration and be accountable to the service and use of the Center by members. Conduct formal performance reviews with staff. Enforce departmental policies through effective Center communications system. Communicate proactively on all matters relative to Center operations, staff and members. Resolve staff and/or member issues using effective customer service and leadership skills. Maintain a professional attire and demeanor at all times. Stay current on industry trends. Participate in Center and community events as needed
COMPETENCIES
Knowledge Have experience and working knowledge of protocols and programs for working with special populations including persons that are overweight or who have diabetes. Exhibit experience in working with various intake and assessment protocols. Possess the ability to be flexible in working with the research teams, open to new ideas and methodologies Demonstrate knowledge of exercise physiology and fitness programming. Maintain CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications. Demonstrate a working knowledge of all standard operating procedures and policies that pertain to the center. Exhibit an understanding of budgets and department financial reports and processes. Keeps current with industry trends/literature and communicates them to staff. Keeps current with center related programs, policies and procedures. Demonstrate ability to articulate variances in revenues/production/expenses versus budget.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
College degree required in Exercise Science, Physical Education or related field. Experience working with research protocols required. Current certification from a nationally recognized agency, including
ACSM, AFAA, NASM, ACE, NSPA, NSCA
preferred. Current CPR, AED and First Aid training. Experience working with weight management and diabetes programs and clients Minimum five years' experience overseeing fitness/personal training/programs in a fitness center setting required, showing positive outcomes and impact. Strong problem solving and customer service background.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires long periods of standing or sitting. Moderate use of computer terminal screen, right or left hand use, typing. Grasping and gripping movements Ability to lift and/or carry 50 lbs. Some lifting may require additional assistance from another staff person. Employee is expected to use discretionary judgment and ask for assistance from another employee if an item is perceived to be too heavy to lift without assistance. Use of personal safety equipment required. Frequent use of chemicals, including pool chemicals, cleaning and laundry supplies. Continuous exposure to moderate to loud noise. Occasional exposure to bodily fluids. Occasional lifting, pulling, climbing, kneeling, and bending. Must be able to demonstrate verbally or physically, Intermediate writing skills
