Forestry Technician 1

The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Incumbent will complete forest inventory and prepare timber sales on state forest properties under the direction of a Forester 1 and/or Forestry Technician II.

Incumbent will be required to:

• Gather and input forest inventory data into the State Forest Inventory Database.
• Assist with timber type mapping and inventory plot layout using handheld GPS/GIS technology.
• Collect stand analysis data and mark timber according to Forester's marking guide and prescription.
• Assist with lay out and inspection of timber sales.
• Use ArcPro for creating and editing shapefiles and maps.

Incumbent may be required to work alone in rough terrain during all seasons. Essential skills include tree identification, tree diameter and height measurement, GPS navigation and GIS ability. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to: calculating timber volumes, summarizing timber tallies, preparing timber sale maps, and assisting with recreation projects. Good public relation skills are required. Must have the ability to use basic forestry equipment including electronic data collector, compass, Biltmore stick, point sample prism, and have working knowledge of Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat, and ESRI ArcPro computer software. The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silviculture OR One (1) year of technical forestry experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required.

Overnight travel may be required.

Must be able to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds.
