Job Description
General Description:
The Counselor, under the supervision of the Director of Counseling, provides comprehensive academic, personal, and placement counseling to students from diverse backgrounds. The counselor is responsible for helping students develop academic improvement plans, as needed, and assisting students with accessing available resources. This position, located at the Honeycutt Center in Scotland County, is responsible for coordinating support services for all students at this campus. Duties and Responsibilities of thePosition:
Provide comprehensive counseling services to all students, including those with disabilities, ensuring equitable access to accommodations and fostering a supportive learning environment. Work collaboratively with other Student Services personnel, to ensure basic cross-training and knowledge sharing, in support of the one-stop approach to enrollment on the Scotland County Campus. Foster relationships with students to promote student development, retention, and persistence to completion, providing personal and social counseling on individual and group bases and initiating referrals to other professionals and agencies when appropriate. Assist students who are on Academic Warning, Probation or Suspension, utilizing messaging software, as well as other methods, to communicate with students in a timely manner; helping them identify and implement academic success strategies, including developing an academic improvement plan. In collaboration with the Counseling Team, help develop and facilitate workshops and peer groups sessions which address a variety of mental health concerns (e.g., depression, anxiety, grief, Title IX), making appropriate referrals as needed. In collaboration with the Career and Transfer Student Advisor - Scotland County, guide prospective students through the enrollment steps, including submission of admissions and FASFA applications, basic knowledge of Financial Aid scholarship opportunities, placement test administration and interpretation, and reviewing curriculum offerings. Works to resolve student issues, facilitating detailed or technical support from internal and external resources. Helps ensure students on the Scotland County campus are served equitably, receiving the same level and quality of services as students on main campus. Participate in college-wide recruitment and retention initiatives. Attend professional development trainings and in-services, maintaining current knowledge of best practices related to duties and areas of responsibility. Ensure compliance with FERPA, Department of Education rules and regulations, state law and community college system regulations and college policies and procedure. Teach ACA 122 College Transfer Success classes as needed . Effectively document interactions and details regarding students in the student advising software. Other duties as assigned. (Willingness to accept and fulfill additional assignments.)Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of the community college, especially related to fulfillment of the open-door policy. Understanding of and commitment to the mission and vision of Richmond Community College. Must be able to work as an effective member of the Student Services team. Ability to work with and understand the nature and needs of individuals at various educational levels and all levels of development. Physical ability sufficient to meet job requirements. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and computer data entry.Minimum Education and Experience:
Master's degree in counseling or psychology required. Two (2) years of experience working with diverse individuals, preferably in a post-secondary setting required. Testing and career development experience strongly desired. National Board Certification or NC Licensed Professional Counselor Certification preferred.Salary:
