General AssignmentReporter-Council Bluffs, IAThe Daily Nonpareil is seeking a general assignment reporterto cover Council Bluffs and surrounding communities in Southwest Iowa. The rolewill include a mix of public affairs reporting, including city and countygovernment, and feature writing, as well as some multimedia journalism.

We are looking for someone who can go beyond simply listingwhat happens at a meeting to focus on how stories impact our readers and ourcommunity. You should be digitally savvy and ready to shoot your own photos andvideo to accompany stories. You should be comfortable juggling a variety ofassignments as well as meeting daily deadlines while prioritizing time forlarger enterprise projects. We want someone who will take initiative torobustly cover our community.

Every day is different. This is true local journalism whereone can make an impact on a community that benefits from local news. You shouldexpect to file 2-3 stories each day on different topics.

The Nonpareil's coverage regularly wins awards from the IowaNewspaper Association, which named us the statewide runner-up in the generalexcellence category for our circulation class in 2026. Council Bluffs is partof the Omaha metropolitan area, so you would have the benefits of a largercommunity while covering a community of a little more than 62,000 people. Weare part of Lee Enterprise's network of newspapers across Iowa, expandingthe reach of our work.

The ideal candidate would have:

• Experience covering government and reporting fora general audience.
• Familiarity with AP style and writing storiesfor a print-oriented audience.
• Solid news judgment and the ability to followleads, find stories and develop features and enterprise stories based on thefacts and narratives uncovered during reporting.
• Understanding of how to adjust coverage based ondigital metrics and feedback.
• Skill to write stories, provide social mediacoverage, take photos, shoot video and keep an editor updated while covering anassignment and quickly turn around their coverage.
• Curiosity about the world around them andwhatever topic they are currently exploring.

A bachelor's degree in journalism is expected but notrequired; relevant experience would also be considered. Recent collegegraduates are welcome to apply. This opportunity is perfect for someone whowants to start or advance their journalism career and build out theirportfolio.

You should also expect to work some evenings, weekends andholidays, but we offer a flexible working schedule. You should be comfortablemanaging a list of assignments, so you are able to meet deadlines.
