Job Title:

General Laborer / Material Sorter Job Description This entry-level role focuses on manually sorting and separating recyclable materials in a busy industrial plant. You will work on your feet throughout the day, using your hands to identify and remove non-compliant items from bales of paper and plastic packaging products. This position offers a straightforward way to get started quickly, with the potential to transition into a long-term, full-time general labor opportunity based on performance.

Shift:

7am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday Responsibilities Manually sort and separate recyclable materials from bales, identifying and organizing acceptable versus non-compliant items. Remove hangers, plastics, and other non-compliant materials from incoming bags and place them into the correct containers for further processing. Handle and store incoming materials in the designated areas of the plant, following established procedures. Maintain a clean and orderly work area by performing general plant housekeeping, including sweeping and basic cleaning tasks. Support general labor tasks such as loading, packing, and packaging materials as needed. Monitor materials and equipment during the sorting process and promptly report any equipment issues or safety concerns to supervisor or maintenance staff. Follow all safety guidelines and participate actively in safety practices while working on the plant floor. Work collaboratively with team members to help reduce backlog and meet daily production and processing goals. Essential Skills Ability to perform continuous manual labor while standing and working with hands throughout the shift. Comfort working in a recycling environment with paper and plastic packaging products. Willingness to perform repetitive tasks such as sorting, cleaning, sweeping, packing, loading, and general housekeeping. Comfort working in a large, industrial plant environment with active production and material movement. Ability to follow instructions, adhere to safety procedures, and report issues promptly. Reliability and consistency in attendance and punctuality for a Monday-Friday, first-shift schedule. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in general labor, warehouse, production, sorting, loading, packaging, or housekeeping is helpful but not required. Comfort doing hands-on, "dirty" work with used materials, even though items are not heavily soiled. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with nonstop manual tasks. Willingness to work around forklifts and other moving equipment on the plant floor. Openness to long-term opportunities, with potential to move into a full-time general labor position based on performance. Why Work Here? Work Environment You will work in a medium-sized plant that converts paper products and handles large bales of paper and plastic packaging materials. The facility is approximately 120,000 square feet with 10 loading docks and cross-docking activity, creating a busy, active industrial setting. The building is older and open, with a messy environment due to stacked product and occasional unpleasant odors typical of used materials. Forklifts and other equipment move large products around the plant floor, so awareness of surroundings and adherence to safety rules are essential. The role is on first shift, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The work is entirely on-site, physically active, and involves being on your feet most of the day. Steel-toe boots are required as part of the safety attire. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Barrington, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $16.50 - $16.50/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
