Monday-Friday, with occasional overtime, weekends, or emergency call-outs as needed Position Summary The Public Works Department is seeking a dependable and hardworking General Laborer to assist with the maintenance, repair, and improvement of public infrastructure and facilities. This position performs a variety of manual labor tasks in support of streets, drainage systems, parks, utilities, and other public service operations. Candidates should be safety-conscious, able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and willing to work as part of a team. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform manual labor related to street, sidewalk, drainage, and utility maintenance Assist with asphalt patching, concrete work, landscaping, and debris removal Operate hand tools, power tools, and small equipment safely and efficiently Load and unload materials, equipment, and supplies Assist with traffic control setup, including cones, barricades, and signage Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, vehicles, and equipment Respond to emergency situations such as storms, flooding, or utility issues when required Follow all department safety policies and procedures Perform other related duties as assigned Qualifications High school diploma or GED required Previous construction, maintenance, landscaping, or public works experience preferred but not required Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting 50+ pounds regularly Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain within a specified time frame Strong work ethic, reliability, and teamwork skills Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic knowledge of construction and maintenance practices Ability to safely operate tools and equipment Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions Good communication and problem-solving skills Commitment to workplace safety and public service Benefits Competitive pay Health, dental, and vision insurance Retirement/pension plan Paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave Opportunities for training and advancement How to Apply Interested applicants should submit an application and resume to Summerdale Town Hall at 502 Lee Avenue, Summerdale, AL 36580 or email .
