About Settlers' Cooperative Established in 1917, Settlers' Cooperative, Inc. is a member-owned, full-service retail cooperative serving Bruce Crossing and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Co-Op offers grocery, fresh meats, deli/bakery, gasoline & diesel fuel, bulk propane delivery, feed & seeds, sporting goods, hardware and convenience services—supporting a rural community with essential goods and services. Job Overview We are seeking a dynamic and strategic General Manager to oversee daily operations, financial performance and staff leadership while executing Board-approved goals. The ideal candidate will drive sales growth, optimize operational efficiency, and foster a positive work environment ensuring exceptional customer service. This pivotal role reports directly to the Board of Directors and is responsible for implementing company policies and managing budgets. This is a hands-on leadership position that will represent the Co-op and cultivate strong relations with staff, cooperative members and business partners to ensure our store remains a vibrant, profitable hub of our community. Responsibilities Lead and motivate the team to achieve sales targets and deliver outstanding customer service. Oversee daily store operations across all departments. Supervise hiring, training & development, and performance evaluations. Manage budgets, purchasing, and inventory control to maintain optimal stock levels and financial accuracy. Ensure compliance with safety standards, Point of Sale systems operation, food, fuel, propane and labor regulations, as well as risk management. Handle customer complaints professionally, ensuring high satisfaction levels while maintaining a positive shopping environment. Represent the Co-op to members and the community Utilize strong communication skills to foster teamwork, resolve conflicts, and promote a unified store culture. Supervise facilities and equipment while keeping the store clean, well-stocked, and efficiently managed at all times. Required Qualifications 5+ years management experience in retail, grocery, fuel or cooperative environments. Proven leadership, communication and staff management skills. Strong background in retail sales management, pricing strategies, budgeting, and inventory control. Excellent negotiation skills coupled with experience in purchasing and merchandising to maximize profitability. Familiarity with POS systems, cashiering procedures, accounting and store management software. Exceptional organizational skills combined with time management expertise to handle multiple responsibilities efficiently. Ability to work closely with a Board of Directors Bachelor's degree or equivalent Preferred Qualifications Experience in cooperative or member-owned organizations Knowledge of rural retail or agricultural supply operations Familiarity with propane, fuel or food service compliance Compensation & Benefits Compensation salary based on experience Benefits package available Long-term leadership opportunity in a historic community cooperative How to Apply Apply via Indeed.com, submit resume to businessoffice@settlerscoop.com or bring to the Business Office Monday-Friday 8 am - 4 pm Eastern.
