The course meets once a week for 2 hours from 9/7/26-12/20/26. Preferred method of teaching is fully in person, on campus. Advanced Psychosocial Interviewing and Counseling Methods for
Genetic Counselors Course Description:
This graduate level course provides exploration of and practice in counseling skills applied to genetic counseling practice. Students develop proficiency in interviewing techniques, active listening, and client-centered decision-making, with emphasis on culturally responsive and trauma-informed care. Course content addresses the psychosocial dimensions of genetic counseling, including grief and bereavement, crisis intervention, and facilitating patient adaptation. Students also explore professional applications of counseling skills and strategies for practitioner self-care. Counseling skills are applied to genetic counseling scenarios, as well as to professional interactions. Students learn to utilize different counseling techniques as they relate to genetic counseling practice; to identify counseling strategies that can be applied to specific patient scenarios; and to apply psychosocial skills in a genetic counseling session to facilitate patient management.
Application materials should include:
a cover letter, CV, evidence of past teaching including course syllabus (if applicable), and three professional references who will be contacted for a letter of recommendation upon submission of the candidate's application. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time. This is an in-person teaching appointment, with the expectation that the appointed individual will teach on campus for the duration of the contract period.
Dates of employment:
9/7/26-12/20/26 Compensation for this position is a per-course rate based on degree level (Masters/Doctorate). Required Qualifications Applicants should have a terminal degree in a counseling field and professional counseling experience in Genetic Counseling or a closely related field (Clinical Counseling, Psychology, Social Work). Applicants with experience in genetic counseling and teaching graduate-level students are preferred. Preferred Qualifications Applicants should have comfort using hybrid learning technologies such as Zoom and online learning management systems.
