Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Deputy City Manager (or his or her designee), and within the administrative structure, the Senior Center Director is responsible for the overall management, operation, and programming of the Senior Center, including fostering a welcoming, safe, accessible, and engaging environment. The Director shall work collaboratively with the Goddard Senior Citizens Advisory Board, give good-faith consideration to the Board's input regarding programming, outreach, hospitality, and member experience, and should ordinarily work toward consensus with the Board on routine programming and service matters whenever reasonably possible; however, operational decisions remain subject to the City's administrative chain of command. Goddard Senior Center programming includes recreational, educational, nutritional, information/referral, and social opportunities to senior adults in the community. The Director provides leadership, develops programs, recruits and manages volunteers, and maintains the center's facilities and budget. The Director supervises the Senior Meals Kitchen Coordinator to assure the safe and timely delivery of home-bound and congregant meals. The position is responsible for securing and managing funding including contributions, awarded grant funds, as well as grant-seeking to maintain and expand services and programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement recreational, educational, and wellness programs for seniors.
  • Develop new programs based on community needs and trends.
  • Monitor participation and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Participate in long-range planning to expand senior services, forecast needs, and develop strategic goals for the Center in collaboration with City administration and with advisory input from the Senior Citizens Advisory Board.
  • Create, write, and oversee marketing, outreach, newsletters, monthly calendar of activities and events, social media, Goddard Senior Center City webpage, and other communications to increase membership/participation and ensure visibility in the community.
  • Schedule volunteer assignments and ensure adequate coverage for programs and activities.
  • Manage, guide and direct volunteers. Recruit, interview and match volunteer's interests and strengths to the program needs of the Center.
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with local businesses, healthcare providers, service organizations, and community agencies to expand programming and resource offerings for senior adults.
  • Remains educationally current on seniors' topics of interest or needs through attending required and recommended trainings and workshops.
  • Prepare and manage the Center's annual budget in coordination with the City administration, while providing regular budget updates and receiving advisory input from the Senior Citizens Advisory Board .
  • Monitor expenditures; review and make purchases; review financial reports ensuring fiscal responsibility according to all adopted City policies and procedures.
Seek and manage grants, fundraising, sponsorships, and community partnerships to supplement funding, consistent with City policies and procedures; and grant applications submitted on behalf of the City shall be subject to review and approval through the City's administrative process. Maintain the center's building and equipment in a safe, clean, and functional condition and report needed repairs, maintenance, and custodial services to the designated City staff.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with City administration, the Senior Citizens Advisory Board, and local and regional community organizations, including, but not limited to, Sedgwick County Department of Aging and Disabilities, the Goddard Senior Meals Program provider, and senior advocacy groups.
  • Provide regular reports to the Senior Citizens Advisory Board regarding Senior Center programs, activities, expenditures, fundraising proceeds, grant activity, and budget status, in coordination with City finance staff as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Citizens Advisory Board Chairperson and City staff to prepare meeting agendas, provide supporting information, and assist with administrative support functions related to Advisory Board meetings, records, and communications.
  • In the event of a vacancy or staffing transition, work collaboratively with City administration and the Senior Citizens Advisory Board to support continuity of programming, volunteer coordination, and community communication, consistent with the Board's advisory role.
  • Respond to and assist with inquiries, concerns, needs, and requests from senior participants and their families.
  • Maintain accurate records of membership, attendance, program activities, and finances while ensuring confidentiality as appropriate and necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with city policies, health and safety regulations, and applicable grant requirements.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public using principles of good customer service including responding to questions, complaints and concerns in a prompt, professional and respectful manner. Greet and assist the public in person and on the telephone, email, or other forms of correspondence, responding to inquiries in a courteous manner and providing information within the scope of knowledge and authority. Organize and maintain files of records and correspondence of both routine and confidential nature. Prepare, submit, and/or present accurate reports as required or requested and submit in a timely manner in accordance with all deadlines. Develop and maintain the GoddardGo Transportation Program, including compliance with all transportation safety standards, required vehicle maintenance, and grant reporting. Attend all required City staff meetings and attend occasional evening or weekend senior center events, programs, or outreach activities.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Documented experience in customer service through employment or volunteer positions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Coursework or training in gerontology, social work or other closely related topics.
REQUIRED JOB COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion regarding business-related files, reports and conversations, within the provision of Freedom of Information Act and other applicable State and Federal statutes and regulations
  • Basic proficiency with computer software including office computer applications for word processing and spreadsheets.
