Job Description

Superior Fresh Family Farms is a family organization committed to re-establishing a healthier relationship to the lands we live on, the waters we live by, and the foods we eat. The 800-acre Northfield, WI, site hosts several types of organic and closed-loop food production, as well as many acres of restored native habitats and flora. The Grounds Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a beautifully manicured farm landscape that reflects a high standard of care, presentation, and stewardship of the land. This role oversees daily grounds operations, including lawn care, landscape maintenance, ornamental plantings, and seasonal improvements, ensuring the property remains safe, welcoming, and visually exceptional. The Grounds Supervisor leads the grounds team, manages equipment and materials, and implements horticultural best practices that promote plant health, biodiversity, and conservation-minded practices. Through thoughtful landscape management and attention to detail, this position helps create an environment that balances aesthetic excellence with sustainable care of the land. Primary Job Functions Oversee daily maintenance of farm grounds to ensure a consistently well-manicured, appearance across production facilities, lawns, trails, gardens, and open spaces. Supervise and schedule grounds crew activities including mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, planting, irrigation, and seasonal clean-up. Develop and implement landscape maintenance plans that balance aesthetic excellence with conservation-minded land stewardship. Maintain ornamental gardens, trees, hedgerows, and native plant areas to preserve a healthy, visually appealing, and ecologically supportive landscape. Promote biodiversity by integrating native plants, pollinator-friendly areas, and habitat features where appropriate within the farm landscape. Monitor turf health and soil conditions; coordinate fertilization, aeration, reseeding, and integrated pest and weed management using environmentally responsible practices. Oversee operation, maintenance, and safe use of groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, tractors, trimmers, and irrigation systems. Support water conservation efforts through responsible irrigation management and soil health practices that reduce runoff and improve moisture retention. Ensure all grounds, walking paths, gardens, and gathering areas remain safe, clean, and visually inviting for staff, guests, and visitors. Foster a culture of safety by adhering to and promoting safety protocols and guidelines in all farm operations and equipment usage. Train and mentor grounds staff on horticultural best practices, conservation principles, equipment safety, and the standards required to maintain a high-quality, park-like farm environment. Ensure adequate staffing to meet business needs through scheduling employees and approve/deny time off requests. Maintain time and attendance records for assigned personnel. Make employment decisions and/or recommendations such as hiring, improvement plans, transfers, promotions, corrective actions, terminations, and pay adjustments. Participate in safety training programs, support safety initiatives and attend workshops contributing to the ongoing development of safety programs to enhance the well-being of the farm workforce. Job Qualifications Education:
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
3 - 5 years of supervisory experience Proven experience in landscaping and grounds maintenance Licenses or Certifications Driver's license ATV license Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator license Farm equipment/chainsaw safety Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong understanding of safety protocols and a commitment to a safe working environment. Knowledge of turf management, soil health, irrigation systems, and seasonal landscape care. Understanding of plant identification, native species, and invasive species control. Skilled in operation, troubleshooting and repair of landscaping equipment and irrigation systems Physical ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions. Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team. Coordinate multiple project within established timeframes. Encourage the building of mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members. Work in stressful situations maintaining composure Excellent problem-solving skills. Effective time management and organizational skills Work independently as well as in a team environment Handle multiple projects simultaneously within established time constraints. Seeing :
Must have close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Communication :
Must be able to effectively communicate with coworkers in order to perform the requirements of the position.
Fingering/Grasping/Feeling :
Must be able to perform repetitive tasks with both hands to include planting seeds, moving rafts, and cutting produce.
Standing/Walking :
Will remain standing for long periods of time and must be able to move about from one area of the workplace to another.
Climbing/Stooping/Bending/Kneeling/Reaching :
Will bend, twist, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach at or above shoulder level.
Lifting :
Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 25 lbs. continuously, 50 lbs. occasionally, and 100 lbs. rarely.
Pulling/Pushing :
Will transport loads of up to 100 lbs.
Work Environment :
Predominately in farm buildings and outdoor environments. Schedule Expectations 1. May include evenings, weekends, and holidays. 2. Located in remote/rural environment.
