Job Description

Primary Purpose:
Assist the School Nurse (RN) by assuming routine recordkeeping activities, providing minor first aid care for students, and conducting campus health screenings. Work under the immediate guidance and direction for a licensed registered nurse.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High School diploma or GED CPR/AED/First Aid Certification (current certification or willing to obtain) Certifications to provide health screenings - vision, hearing, spinal, type II diabetes (current certification or willing to obtain)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills Ability to use personal computer and software to do word processing and data entry Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) Ability to work with children Knowledge of general office equipment
Experience:
1-year experience in health-related position Experience working with school-aged children, preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Health Services Provide basic first aid and care for students for minor injuries, illnesses and chronic health conditions according to district policy and regulations/protocols established by the Health Services Coordinator or Medical Advisor. Administer medications to students under the assignment of the School Administrator or delegation by the School Nurse (RN), following district policies and procedures. Maintain an accurate log of medications dispensed to students. Assist with health screening activities, including vision, hearing, spinal and type II diabetes screenings as directed by the School Nurse (RN) or Health Services Coordinator. Provide certain prescribed medical treatments or procedures for students after being trained and evaluated by the School Nurse (RN) in accordance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act and delegation rules. Contact parents of students who need to be picked up from school according to established school health services protocols or as directed by the School Nurse (RN). Contact Emergency Management Services according to established school health services protocols or as directed by the School Nurse (RN). Serve as an Unlicensed Diabetes Care Assistant (UDCA) after receiving appropriate training from the School Nurse (RN) and under the assignment of the School Administrator. Safety Use Universal Precautions Procedures when providing care to students and when cleaning any bodily fluids spills. Keep the health clinic clean and sanitary. Report any known safety hazards to the School Administrator, School Nurse (RN) and Health Services Coordinator. Clerical Enter information on student health records Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required, including accurate and updated health records on all students. Prepare correspondence, reports and records using a personal clinic computer. Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed. Compliance Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of State Health Services rules, State Board of Education rules, Lockhart ISD Board Policy, Health Services departmental protocols/guidelines/regulations. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulation. Maintain confidentiality. Maintain CPR/AED/First Aid certification Maintain vision, hearing, type II diabetes and spinal screening certifications Communicate regularly with the School Nurse (RN) and the Health Services Coordinator regarding communicable diseases, specific student health needs/concerns, campus and department issues, health and safety hazards, and all non-routine matters. Perform other duties as assigned

Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting no ambulatory students
Environment:
Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases
Mental Demands:
