Job Description
Position Summary The Anesthesia Technician assists Anesthesia, under the direction of the Anesthesiologist, CRNA and Surgical Services Supervisors. This position also encompasses PreOp/PACU Support Associate duties of assisting in the PreOp and PACU areas with the essential duties and responsibilities listed as assigned. The position requires diversity, adaptability and flexibility. Responsible for requisitioning, set-up, cleaning and maintenance of anesthesia equipment. Essential Job Functions/Accountabilities Checks, cleans and restocks anesthesia machine, anesthesia carts and specialty carts (Pediatric and adult; MH and difficult airway) with required supplies as outlined on the anesthesia stock PAR list and per Infection Control guidelines. Maintains adequate supply of all stock items in workroom and keeps workroom clean and orderly; determines the ordering status of supplies and works with materials management to maintain or adjust PAR levels. Replaces tanks on the back of Anesthesia machines (Oxygen, Nitrous oxide, and air) as needed. Cleans, disinfects and returns to sterile processing reusable equipment and various types of instruments, following infection control guidelines. Daily and between patients cleans anesthesia machines/carts per manufacturer guidelines; disassembles and decontaminates anesthesia equipment and supplies; reports equipment problems to Healthcare Technology Engineering (Biomedical). Responds immediately to Operating room calls that request assistance regarding anesthesia supplies, forms, equipment or other items required during the surgical procedure. Understands setup and operation of anesthesia induction equipment. Maintains customer focus while performing job duties, uses proper communication skills, shows initiative, and works well in a team-oriented environment. Moves heavy equipment, anesthesia machines and carts as needed. Follows infection control guidelines. Universal Precautions are required. Sets up and assists with anesthesia procedure; Set-up intubations equipment; Assists in placing monitors on patients; Participates in the Time Out under the direction of the Block Room RN. Completes biannual inventory for anesthesia supplies; Completes outdate check for supplies monthly. Maintains awareness at all times of location of equipment and supplies. Troubleshoot problems relating to availability or working conditions of equipment and supplies. Ensure that requests for equipment service from physicians, residents or CRNAs are handled expediently. Assists with transport of the patient to and from the Block Room, Transports patient to car in wheelchair. Cleans/Disinfects the Ultrasound unit between patients; Disinfects bed/chair and remakes beds; Disinfects PACU counters, Block Room counters and over bed lights at the end of each day; Cleans Pre-Op chair spaces, IV poles, counters and monitors when pre-op for the day; Places filled sharps containers with IV tubing trash and contaminated trash. Stocks Pre-Op area with chairs, gowns, slippers; Stocks warmer with blankets and thermal spreads; Communicates with Pre-Op-PACU Coordinator/Manager if laundry items appear to be over or under stocked; Obtains supplies from stock room, as requested; Restocks bedside with necessary items; Assists with unloading supplies in stockroom, when time permits. Shares ideas for improvement/revision of policies/procedures, which would enhance the work environment, and overall operation of the Surgery Center. All other duties not specifically assigned.
Position Requirements Education:
High school diploma or GED required.Experience:
Three (3) to five (5) years of demonstrated experience in field or profession preferred.Technical Skills:
Knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology, and sterile techniques.Schedule:
