JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Athletic Director, the Certified Athletic Trainer provides preventive, emergency, and rehabilitative care to student-athletes participating in high school athletic programs. The Certified Athletic Trainer works collaboratively with coaching staff, team physicians, and consulting medical professionals to support student health and safety and performs related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Attend athletic practices and competitions to provide injury prevention services, first aid, and emergency care to injured student-athletes. Advise coaching staff, student-athletes, parents, and student athletic trainers on the care, prevention, and management of athletic injuries. Educate coaches, parents, and athletes on injury and illness prevention, including acclimatization, hydration, electrolyte balance, and nutrition. Evaluate, select, modify, fit, and apply protective and prophylactic equipment and custom devices as prescribed by a physician or as needed to minimize the risk of injury or re-injury. Assess athletes with acute, sub-acute, and chronic musculoskeletal injuries or medical conditions to determine appropriate plans of care. Perform clinical assessments to identify impairments, functional limitations, injury severity, and disabilities resulting from athletic participation, and determine when referral to other healthcare providers is necessary. Collaborate and communicate with treating physicians and other healthcare professionals as appropriate. Communicate relevant medical information, in compliance with HIPAA guidelines, to athletes, parents, and coaching staff regarding injury status, treatment plans, participation clearance, and return-to-play decisions, deferring to medical personnel when required. Complete and maintain accurate injury reports and documentation for all reported injuries occurring during practices and athletic events. Evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions and apply evidence-based treatment techniques. Recommend, fit, and apply braces, splints, and assistive devices to support recovery and safe return to activity. Provide education and instruction to athletes regarding self-management, rehabilitation exercises, and injury prognosis. Maintain the athletic training facility by cleaning, disinfecting, and properly maintaining equipment and treatment areas. Inventory, order, and maintain athletic training supplies and materials and assist with athletic training budget preparation as directed. Maintain records and reports in accordance with District policies and applicable state and federal laws and regulations, ensuring accurate documentation, proper medical terminology, and accepted abbreviations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to a bachelor's degree in athletic training, physical education, or a related field, and at least one year of experience in the care, management, and prevention of athletic injuries. Licenses and other
Requirements:
Valid California Driver's License. Valid First-Aid/ CPR Certification. Current National Certification as a Certified Athletic Trainer (BOC or equivalent).
Knowledge of:
Principles of anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, nutrition, and first aid. Prevention, recognition, and treatment of athletic injuries. Physical fitness, hygiene, and safety procedures related to athletic programs. Safety and protective athletic equipment. Taping, bandaging, therapeutic, and rehabilitative techniques. Disinfection and sanitation procedures. General principles of training, supervision, and work direction. Individualized rehabilitation and reconditioning techniques. First aid and CPR practices. Oral and written communication skills. Record-keeping and report preparation methods.
Ability to:
Instruct students in proper exercise, rehabilitation, and injury-prevention techniques. Operate first aid, rehabilitation, and adaptive athletic equipment. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and medical professionals. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment:
Indoor and outdoor work settings with variable and nontraditional work hours. Exposure to seasonal heat, cold, and adverse weather conditions. Potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens, chemicals, airborne communicable diseases, high noise levels, and dust or particulate matter. Exposure to traffic hazards during outdoor or event-related duties.
