PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the care, prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illness of members of all District athletic teams. All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, championing the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university
  • Valid license from Texas Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers
Preferred:
  • Two years' experience as an athletic trainer
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
  • Ability to provide injury prevention and rehabilitation services.
  • Ability to provide emergency care
  • Knowledge of therapeutic modalities and ability to apply appropriate treatment to treat student athletic injuries
  • Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes and assistants
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
MAJOR REPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Administers emergency care to the injured.
  • Attends home and away varsity football games.
  • Attends all other home varsity-level sport events.
  • Administers emergency injury care to athletes, including varsity team members, as well as to sports fans attending home games.
  • Coordinates on-the-spot emergency care procedures and transportation of injured athletes, if needed.
  • Coordinates information among coaches, parents and physicians, if needed.
  • Maintains a well-supplied co-ed training room facility.
  • Establishes procedures for training room.
  • Maintains an orderly and sanitary training room at all times.
  • Verifies that the training room is functioning efficiently and safety.
  • Selects and maintains all athletic training supplies and equipment.
  • Provides and maintains a well-stocked medical kit for each athletic team.
  • Provides follow-up care and communication for injured/ill athletes.
  • Acts as a liaison among the athletes, the parents, coaches and the physician(s) involved.
  • Follows prescribed treatment of the school or family physician for injured athletes.
  • Plans rehabilitative exercise program for injured athletes in cooperation with the physicians(s).
  • Advice coaches regarding status of injured athletes and recovery progress.
  • Works with coaches to develop conditioning programs to decrease chances of re-injury.
  • Provides preventative care and instruction.
  • Administers taping, wrapping, padding, bandaging, bracing and splinting daily wound care and foot care.
  • Counsel athletes regarding general principals of diet, exercise and rest.
  • Works with athletes seeking counsel for physical or mental well being.
  • Assists with administrative duties of the athletic program.
  • Contacts parents to advise of needed attention prior to medical treatment when a problem exceeds the trainer's expertise.
  • Aids the equipment manager or coach in the selection and fit of protective equipment based on research-designed safety features.
  • Completes injury reports for athletes who incur illness/injuries requiring medical referral.
  • Maintains daily records of all athletes receiving care in the training room.
  • Participates in the National Athletic Injury/Illness Reporting System to support compilation of accurate statistics at the high school level.
  • Organizes and assists with administration of physicals for District athletes.
  • Collects and organizes physical forms, birth certificates and emergency information data for athletes participating in all sports.
  • Submits a comprehensive list of all athletes participating in each sport for insurance purposes.
  • Assists coaches in completing and forwarding an accurate eligibility list to the district committee and the state University Interscholastic League office.
  • Participates in program activities of the athletic teams.
  • Selects and educates male and female student trainers.
  • Instruct student trainers in the use of training room equipment.
  • Instruct student trainers in some areas of care and treatment.
  • Supervises student trainers performing their duties in the training room as well as during practices and games.
  • Maintains professional attitude and behavior.
  • Demonstrates appropriate standards for citizenship, sportsmanship and respect for healthful living.
  • Remains current in the area of sports medicine by attending local, state and national conferences.
  • Serves as a resource person for questions regarding sports medicine.
  • Promotes community understanding through communication with parents, concern for athletes and interests in the sports program.
  • Complies with the position description of the classroom teacher.
  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
Mental demands:
Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
