Job Description

Hearing Associates is a growing hearing healthcare private practice based in Mason City, Iowa. We are excited to offer a paid, 12-month externship to a current Au.

D student for the 2027-2028 academic year. The ideal student is driven and passionate about providing excellent patient centered care to individuals from all walks of life. The externship provides hands on experience in the following: Comprehensive diagnostic audiometric evaluations (pediatric and adult) Auditory brainstem response testing Diagnostic vestibular evaluation (VNGs) Fitting and selection of amplification and assistive listening technology. Fitting and follow up with osseointegrated devices. Tinnitus evaluation, counseling, and management. (Including Lenire) Custom hearing protection recommendations and fitting Students will also have the opportunity to participate in our patient instructional classes and community outreach endeavors. No Does the externship site provide orientation to relevant clinical policies and procedures? Yes Does the externship site provide instructions about patient's rights and providing patient education? Yes Does the externship site provide orientation to quality assessment, quality assurance and quality improvement? Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
  • Take a complete case history
  • Strong report-writing skills
  • Competently perform all audiologic evaluations with masking when applicable
  • Solid foundation in hearing aids and performing REM.
  • Good counseling skills for patients of all ages & backgrounds
  • Working knowledge of vestibular evaluations. Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
  • Proficiency in report writing
  • Independently perform all diagnostic evaluations
  • Critically thinking about each case presented
  • Proficiency in counseling, selection, and fitting of hearing aids.
  • Independently perform a full VNG
  • Proficiency in non-sedated ABR evaluations.

No Consortium or collaborative arrangements with other sites? No How frequently will the externship site communicate with the university during the externship? As Needed Communication or other support do expected or required from the university during the externship: Following an official offer, an affiliation agreement between Hearing Associates and the home university will be completed and signed prior to the student's start date. Required student evaluation paperwork should be submitted prior to externship start date.
