Job Description

Position Overview:
Do you want to leverage your fluency in American Sign Language to create real, tangible change in someone's daily life? We are looking for a dedicated ASL specialist to provide personalized, one-on-one support for a Deaf individual living with developmental disabilities. This role goes far beyond translating words—it's about opening doors to self-advocacy, safeguarding personal dignity, and ensuring every thought and need is clearly communicated.
Key Employment Structure:
Please be aware: This is not a position with Support Broker Services, LLC. You will be an employee hired directly by the individual receiving services. The role is facilitated and funded through the participant's long-term care plan (Wisconsin's IRIS program), which defines the parameters for duties and wages. Support Broker Services, LLC is acting solely as a connector to help this individual find the right ASL professional for their personal team.
Core Responsibilities:
Ensure Accurate Dialogue:
Deliver precise, two-way ASL interpretation for healthcare visits, everyday routines, and conversations with support staff.
Foster Autonomy:
Support the individual in confidently expressing their own wants, boundaries, and decisions.
Clarify Complexity:
Break down sophisticated medical language and nuanced social exchanges to ensure complete comprehension.
Promote Respectful Engagement:
Guarantee the individual's voice is central to all interactions and decision-making processes.
Partner Strategically:
Collaborate with the existing care network to develop and maintain communication methods that prioritize the individual's unique personality and goals.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
Strong command of American Sign Language (ASL). Background in supporting individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, especially within the developmental disability community. Must meet and clear all required Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) caregiver screenings, including background checks and mandated reporter status. Demonstrates patience, compassion, and a keen ability to listen beyond the surface. A team-oriented professional focused on achieving outcomes defined by the individual.

$25.00 - $30.00 per hour (allocated through the IRIS participant budget).
