Departmental Overview The Department of Integrative Biology and Bioinformatics (IBIB) at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most diverse biology departments in the world. Position Summary The Lab Manager performs advanced laboratory technical work under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator. This position is responsible for the overall daily operation and management of the laboratory, ensuring that research activities are conducted efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all university and regulatory guidelines. The Lab Manager coordinates technical support for research projects, manages laboratory resources, and provides guidance and training to students and other lab personnel. Responsibilities Lab Management Oversees the daily operations of the laboratory, including scheduling, resource allocation, and equipment maintenance. Manages the procurement of laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment, ensuring cost-effective purchasing and inventory control. Maintains detailed records of lab inventory, chemical logs, and equipment service histories. Coordinates with university facilities and external vendors for equipment repair and facility maintenance. Laboratory Technical Support Provides advanced technical support for ongoing research projects, including the preparation of reagents, buffers, and specialized media. Performs complex molecular biology and biochemical techniques as required by the research goals. Assists in the design and optimization of experimental protocols. Ensures the quality and integrity of data collection and documentation. Regulatory Compliance & Safety Serves as the primary point of contact for laboratory safety and compliance, ensuring adherence to EH&S guidelines. Manages the hazardous waste collection and disposal process in accordance with university policies. Conducts regular safety audits and ensures all lab personnel are trained in safety protocols. Maintains and updates the laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Personnel & Administration Onboards and trains new laboratory members on equipment usage, safety protocols, and lab procedures. Coordinates lab meetings and assists in the organization of research presentations. Provides administrative support to the Principal Investigator regarding grant reporting and documentation. Required Qualifications Three (3) or more years of professional experience in a research laboratory setting. Demonstrated proficiency in molecular biology techniques, including PCR, cloning, and protein purification. Strong organizational skills with experience managing laboratory inventory and procurement. Knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and hazardous waste management. Ability to use University-specific software and administrative systems and/or the ability to learn. Preferred Qualifications Experience managing a laboratory environment within a university or academic setting. Proficiency with advanced imaging equipment and bioinformatics tools. Experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $27.46 - $32.67, Step 1 - 5. This is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Career position eligible for UC benefits.
