This is a hands-on leadership role for a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment and is comfortable developing, implementing, and optimizing a wide range of tissue culture methodologies. The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in cannabis micropropagation, contamination management, media development, genetics preservation, and commercial-scale clone production. The Tissue Culture Lab Manager will be responsible for building and managing a best-in-class genetics program capable of producing disease-free Gen 0 plantlets, Gen 1 clones, and elite mother stock for both internal cultivation operations and external commercial sales. This position offers the opportunity to help build one of Colorado's premier cannabis genetics and propagation businesses from the ground up. Key ResponsibilitiesLaboratory Leadership & Operations Manage all day-to-day tissue culture laboratory operations. Establish laboratory workflows, SOPs, quality standards, and production schedules. Develop and maintain a contamination-free laboratory environment. Oversee equipment maintenance, calibration, and laboratory inventory. Ensure compliance with all applicable state and company regulations. Tissue Culture & Propagation Develop and optimize protocols for: Meristem culture Shoot multiplication Rooting Acclimatization Pathogen elimination Long-term germplasm preservation Design and improve media formulations and growth regulator strategies. Evaluate and implement new tissue culture technologies and methodologies. Troubleshoot contamination, physiological disorders, and culture performance issues. Genetics & Nursery Development Manage a large-scale cannabis genetics library. Preserve and catalog elite cultivars and rare genetics. Develop systems for genetic tracking, data collection, and lineage documentation.
Support commercialization of:
Gen 0 plantlets Gen 1 rooted clones Unrooted cuttings Breeding and nursery stock Commercial Production Develop scalable production systems capable of supplying commercial cultivation customers. Forecast production requirements and capacity planning.
Establish KPIs related to:
Multiplication rates Contamination rates Labor efficiency Production throughput Survival rates Drive continuous improvement initiatives. Team Development Recruit, train, and manage laboratory technicians as the operation scales. Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and scientific excellence. Develop training materials and technical documentation. Research & Development Stay current on industry developments and emerging tissue culture technologies. Conduct experiments to improve propagation efficiency and plant quality. Collaborate with cultivation leadership on genetics evaluation and breeding initiatives. Support development of proprietary genetics and intellectual property. QualificationsRequired Bachelor's degree in Plant Science, Horticulture, Plant Biotechnology, Microbiology, Agriculture, or related field. Minimum 3 years of tissue culture experience. Minimum 2 years of cannabis tissue culture experience preferred. Demonstrated experience operating tissue culture laboratories independently. Strong aseptic technique and contamination management skills. Experience developing and modifying media formulations. Knowledge of plant physiology, micropropagation, and genetics preservation. Strong organizational and project management skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred Commercial cannabis nursery or clone production experience. Experience scaling laboratory operations. Experience managing genetics libraries. Experience with pathogen testing and clean-stock programs. Experience developing SOPs and quality management systems. Knowledge of cannabis regulations and compliance requirements. Ideal Candidate Profile The successful candidate will be: A self-starter who can build systems without extensive direction. Entrepreneurial and excited about creating something from the ground up. Comfortable experimenting with multiple tissue culture methodologies and approaches. Equally capable of scientific research and commercial execution. Highly organized and detail-oriented. Passionate about cannabis genetics, plant health, and innovation. Able to balance laboratory precision with business objectives. Performance Expectations Within the first 90 days, the Tissue Culture Lab Manager will be expected to: Establish laboratory workflows and SOPs. Implement contamination control protocols. Develop production forecasts and KPIs. Create a genetics catalog and tracking system. Demonstrate successful production of healthy tissue culture plantlets. Present a scalable roadmap for commercial clone and genetics production. Compensation & Benefits Compensation will be competitive and based upon experience.
