Job Description
The Laboratory Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the in-house laboratory. This role ensures all lab services are performed efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with regulatory standards (CLIA. The supervisor manages laboratory staff, maintains quality control, and supports clinicians by ensuring timely and reliable test results. The ideal candidate combines strong leadership abilities with technical expertise in clinical laboratory practices.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise, train, and evaluate laboratory personnel. Schedule staff coverage to ensure seamless operation during practice hours. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to lab staff as needed. Oversee daily lab operations, including specimen collection, processing, testing, and reporting. Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and functioning of lab equipment. Manage inventory of lab supplies and reagents; order and restock as necessary. Implement and monitor quality assurance and quality control programs. Ensure all lab procedures comply with federal and state regulations, including CLIA, OSHA, and HIPAA. Prepare for and participate in inspections, audits, and accreditation reviews. Ensure timely, accurate, and confidential reporting of lab results to clinicians. Maintain proper documentation of lab activities, including logs, test results, and maintenance records. Collaborate with the EMR/EHR team to ensure test results are properly integrated into patient charts. Enforce proper biosafety and infection control protocols. Train staff on laboratory safety procedures and emergency protocols. Investigate and report incidents, errors, or accidents per practice policy.Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field. Valid certification as a Medical Technologist (MT). 3+ years of clinical laboratory experience. 1+ year of supervisory or lead lab tech experience. Experience working in a physician office laboratory (POL) or private practice setting. Knowledge of EMR/EHR systems (e.g., Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks). Familiarity with CLIA-waived and moderately complex testing.Skills & Competencies:
Strong leadership and team management skills. High attention to detail and accuracy in lab testing and documentation. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. Strong verbal and written communication abilities. Proficient with laboratory instruments and medical software.Working Conditions:
Clinical/laboratory environment within a medical practice. Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, and infectious materials. May require standing for extended periods and lifting up to 25 pounds.Standard Duties:
Manages laboratory services in accordance with clinic and governmental standards within the established budget Develops departmental goals and objectives Establishes and implements laboratory policies and procedures. Makes recommendations for improvements Ensures accurate and appropriate completion of laboratory tests Monitors budget and revenue reports. Reviews rates and procedural codes. Perform cost analysis on equipment, leases, and rental agreements Supervises the processing of outside laboratory tests Coordinates ordering and receiving of laboratory supplies Selects and trains/orients department personnel. Responsible for work assignment and daily operations Evaluates performance and recommends merit increases, promotion and disciplinary actions Reviews departmental performance and ensures compliance and accreditation, Recommends changes in work methods Collects data, prepares reports, answers correspondence, and complies statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes Serves as liaison between medical staff and the laboratory. Addresses complaints regarding laboratory functions Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations Maintain patient confidentiality Performs related work as required Resolves problems with technical testing involving methods, technique, instrumentation, and equipment utilization Reviews, interprets and evaluates test results and reports for accuracy, precision, readability and consistency Performs chemical analysis of blood and other body fluids to determine chemical components Perform hematological tests using automated methods Perform other blood tests as ordered for patient care Performs quality control checks of instruments, solutions and test results against establish standards. Prepares reagents and other chemical solutions Inventories laboratory supplies. Cleans equipment and work areas. Disposes of contaminated materials. Logs patient specimens and enters test results on forms LIS (Laboratory Information System)Standard Requirements:
