We are dedicated to producing and delivering the highest quality cannabis in the market. The Tissue Culture Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing the tissue culture laboratory operations for cannabis production. This role involves the development and implementation of tissue culture protocols, production of high-quality plantlets, and maintenance of a sterile and efficient laboratory environment. The Tissue Culture Manager will work closely with the cultivation team to ensure the successful propagation and integration of tissue-cultured plants into the production cycle, as well as keeping a bank of genetics for the company.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee daily operations of the tissue culture lab, including sterility standards, organization, and inventory of media, chemicals, and equipment. Develop, standardize, and continuously improve tissue culture protocols (sterilization, media prep, explant selection, micropropagation), incorporating current research and new techniques to increase efficiency and success rates. Produce cannabis plantlets via micropropagation at volumes that meet cultivation demand. Monitor and document growth stage, health, and development throughout production. Implement quality control and pathogen screening, including tissue sampling and testing to detect contamination, viral infections, and fertility issues, with corrective action protocols for any contamination event. Train, supervise, and evaluate lab technicians and staff, including task assignment and regular performance reviews. Coordinate with the cultivation team on integration of tissue-cultured plants into the growing environment and communicate progress and issues to other departments and management. Ensure lab operations comply with regulatory and company standards, including accurate METRC tracking. Maintain records for audits and inspections, uphold safety protocols, and manage the genetic catalog and backup system. Maintain and calibrate lab equipment, including the biosafety cabinet, autoclave, and growth chambers, per manufacturer and regulatory schedules. Author and maintain SOPs for all tissue culture processes, ensuring documentation is audit-ready and current with practice. Maintain accurate tracking and reporting across METRC, Excel, and Dutchie for culture inventory, plant counts, and regulatory compliance.
Provide weekly reporting:
a Monday production plan (scheduled activities, active cultures, priorities) and a Friday wrap-up (output, issues, carryover items).
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Plant Science, Horticulture, Biotechnology, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years of experience in plant tissue culture, preferably with cannabis. Strong knowledge of plant biology, micropropagation techniques, and laboratory management. Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills. Ability to lead and motivate a team. Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Familiarity with regulatory requirements in the cannabis industry is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work in a laboratory setting for extended periods. Manual dexterity for handling delicate plant tissues. Capability to lift and carry laboratory equipment and supplies up to [X] pounds.
Work Environment:
Primarily laboratory-based with some interaction in our cultivation areas. Exposure to chemicals and plant materials. Ability to perform other duties as needed.
