Job Description

Summary of Purpose The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Lab Supervisor provides hands-on supervision and instruction to sonography students in the lab. Responsibilities include demonstrating scanning technique, ensuring safe and correct use of ultrasound equipment, evaluating image quality and anatomic identification, enforcing infection-control and lab policies, and coordinating with program staff to support student readiness for clinical experiences. Typical Duties This description is intended to indicate the types of duties and responsibilities requested of the employee assigned this title. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the duties and responsibilities that may be required: Supervise and coach Diagnostic Medical Sonography students in the lab. Demonstrate and teach proper transducer handling, scanning approaches, patient positioning, protocols, and ergonomics. Evaluate student performance on scanning technique, image acquisition, measurement accuracy, and anatomic identification; provide timely, constructive feedback. Maintain and monitor ultrasound equipment, phantoms, and lab supplies; report malfunctions and coordinate cleaning and preventive maintenance. Enforce safety, professional conduct, and infection-control procedures during and after lab sessions. Communicate availability in advance to the program director and be flexible to accept assigned lab shifts as needed. Collaborate with program staff on curriculum implementation, lab schedules, and assessment. Maintain confidentiality of student records and comply with college policies. Knowledge and Skills Required Strong clinical scanning skills in general abdominal and OB/GYN exams. Ability to instruct, assess, and give clear, professional feedback to students. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Professionalism, dependability, and ability to work with diverse students and staff. Ability to stand for extended periods. Minimum Education and Experience Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program or equivalent. Minimum of one year of clinical experience as a registered sonographer. Must have passed the ARDMS registry in Abdomen (AB) or Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN) or both. Current credentialing by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or equivalent national certification required. Experience with general abdominal and OB/GYN scanning required. Experience with abdominal Doppler is a plus. RVT credential is optional/preferred but not required. Previous teaching, precepting, or supervisory experience preferred.
