Full-time Definition:
The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, and maintaining the integrity of water and wastewater testing. This role provides technical leadership, supervises laboratory staff, manages quality assurance and quality control programs, and ensures accurate and timely reporting of laboratory results. The position requires a strong understanding of water and wastewater chemistry, microbiology, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:
Laboratory Management Oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory to ensure accurate, efficient, and timely testing of water and wastewater samples in compliance with established procedures and regulatory requirements. Technical Oversight Coordinate, review, and prepare regulatory reports, filings, and submissions required by federal, state, and local agencies. Provide technical guidance to laboratory staff on complex analytical methods and data interpretation . Regulatory Compliance Ensure laboratory operations maintain compliance with state Department of Environmental Protection (or equivalent) certifications and other applicable regulatory standards. Prepare and submit required reports and documentation to regulatory agencies as necessary. Supervision of Laboratory Personnel Directly supervise laboratory analysts and technicians performing chemical, microbiological, and physical testing. Provide training, performance feedback, and guidance to ensure adherence to laboratory protocols and quality assurance standards. Administrative Duties Manage laboratory inventory, including chemicals and supplies, and coordinate procurement as needed. Assist with budgeting, resource allocation, and operational planning to support efficient laboratory operations.
Examples of Work:
Reviews analytical data for accuracy and completeness prior to submission to regulatory agencies. Ensures laboratory testing is conducted in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and state-certified laboratory requirements. Coordinates laboratory schedules and assigns work to staff to ensure samples are processed within required regulatory holding times. Conducts routine and preventive maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and equipment.
Examples of Work Continued:
Maintains laboratory quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) programs, including review of control charts, calibration records, and proficiency testing results. Prepares documentation and coordinates laboratory activities related to state certification inspections, audits, and proficiency testing programs. Develops and updates laboratory policies, procedures, and analytical methods to maintain compliance with regulatory standards.
Licenses/Education:
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, or related field required; or a related field required. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in regulatory compliance, environmental management, or a related field. Experience in public utility, wastewater, or municipal government operations strongly preferred. NJ Drivers License in good standing.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years of laboratory experience required, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role preferred. Hands-on experience in water and wastewater testing, including chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses. Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) preferred. Strong organizational and analytical skills with attention to accuracy and detail. Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in complex regulatory matters. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with compliance tracking software. Ability to interpret and apply technical regulations to operational practices. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build cooperative relationships with regulatory agencies and internal staff. Physical Requirements Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Occasional fieldwork, including walking, climbing, or inspecting treatment and utility facilities. Ability to lift and carry materials up to 25 pounds as needed. Visual and manual dexterity for precise laboratory work.
