Job Title:
Laboratory Director Job Description The Laboratory Director leads and oversees all clinical laboratory operations in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment. This role ensures accurate and timely testing services, maintains full regulatory compliance, and supports high-quality patient care through strong leadership and operational excellence. The director works hands-on with laboratory processes, staff, and systems, driving quality, safety, and continuous improvement across all laboratory functions. Responsibilities Oversee daily laboratory operations, including workflow management, staffing, and overall performance of the laboratory team. Ensure accurate, timely, and reliable laboratory testing by reviewing, verifying, and reporting laboratory test results in accordance with established standards. Maintain full compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, COLA, TJC, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation standards. Develop, implement, update, and maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and documentation to support safe, efficient, and compliant operations. Manage and monitor quality control programs, proficiency testing, calibration, and preventive maintenance for all laboratory equipment. Coordinate specimen collection, processing, storage, transport, and referral testing to ensure proper handling and integrity of samples. Collaborate closely with information technology teams, healthcare providers, and organizational leadership to optimize laboratory systems and workflows, including EHR, LIS, and RPMS. Manage laboratory inventory, including ordering and maintaining supplies, overseeing equipment purchases, and coordinating with vendors to ensure reliable service and support. Train, supervise, and mentor laboratory staff, including medical laboratory technologists and phlebotomists, fostering a culture of accountability, professional growth, and teamwork. Perform phlebotomy as needed to support patient care and ensure continuity of services during peak times or staffing shortages. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a closely related field. At least 5 years of clinical laboratory experience in a high-complexity laboratory setting. At least 3 years of Director-level experience or equivalent leadership role in a high-complexity clinical laboratory. Strong knowledge of laboratory regulations and accreditation standards, including CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and related requirements. Demonstrated experience with clinical laboratory instrumentation, quality control programs, and compliance standards. Proven leadership abilities with strong communication, coaching, and organizational skills. Proficiency with laboratory information systems (LIS), electronic health records (EHRs), and related clinical systems such as RPMS. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for reporting, documentation, and data analysis. Hands-on experience in clinical laboratory disciplines such as chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, and general clinical lab operations. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and regulatory compliance. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience leading quality improvement initiatives within a clinical laboratory setting. Laboratory management, including staffing, budgeting, and vendor coordination. Experience supporting inspections and audits by regulatory and accrediting bodies. Ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, including providers, nursing, and administrative leadership. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues, analyze data, and implement effective solutions. Work Environment This is an on-site role in a clinical laboratory setting within a collaborative healthcare environment. The position involves frequent standing, walking, and regular use of laboratory equipment and instrumentation. The role includes routine exposure to bloodborne pathogens and laboratory chemicals and is classified as OSHA Category I. The Laboratory Director may lift up to 30 pounds as part of equipment handling or supply management. The environment emphasizes quality, compliance, and continuous improvement, with a strong focus on patient care and teamwork among laboratory and clinical staff. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Oklahoma City, OK. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $60.00/hr.
