Position Summary The BBS Laboratory Manager oversees the management, maintenance, and operational readiness of teaching laboratories within the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences. This position serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for the department and is responsible for ensuring a safe laboratory environment, managing chemical inventory and safety compliance for both teaching and research laboratories, coordinating laboratory preparation for teaching faculty, and supervising student workers. Additionally, this role manages the department's social media presence and coordinates departmental events to foster community engagement and student well-being.

Principal Accountabilities Responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to the following:
Chemical Hygiene & Safety Management
Serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences
Ensure a safe working environment in all teaching and research laboratories
Enforce OSHA regulations and ensure faculty, students, and staff complete required safety training programs prescribed by the Risk Management department and/or by the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Consultants
Conduct periodic laboratory safety inspections and coordinate corrective actions to address identified hazards and compliance deficiencies. Provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students on chemical hazard assessments and safe laboratory practices. Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure accessibility and compliance
Attend all safety inspections conducted by EH&S Consultants
Conduct annual chemical inventories for teaching and research laboratories in accordance with RI Right to Know mandates
Oversee proper labeling, storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials, toxic substances, and biohazard waste in Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA) and Main Accumulation Area (MAA)
Manage shared teaching and research laboratory chemical inventory, ensuring proper labeling, storage, and disposal practices based on chemical compatibility and safety standards
Manage peroxide-forming chemicals, including testing and mitigation, and coordinate with EH&S personnel as needed
Transport chemicals from SAA locations to the MAA as needed
Coordinate hazardous waste pickup for teaching and research laboratories, including gathering chemicals, preparing them for disposal, and communicating with waste disposal vendors
Maintain accurate disposal records including ongoing communication with Bryant's Risk Management department
Ensure compliance with Bryant University's Chemical Hygiene Plan
Review and recommend updates to Bryant University's Chemical Hygiene Plan and related laboratory safety procedures.
Assist with the response, documentation, and investigation of chemical spills, exposures, and laboratory safety incidents. Teaching Laboratory Preparation & Operations
Communicate regularly with faculty teaching laboratory courses to understand their supply, setup, and scheduling needs
Prepare laboratory supplies, equipment, and reagents according to faculty instructions for each laboratory session
Perform higher-level technical tasks such as mixing chemicals, preparing specialized reagents, and other work requiring advanced training
Order supplies and manage inventory of consumables, chemicals, and equipment to support teaching activities
Organize materials on carts or complete physical setups as directed by faculty
Maintain current inventory of all teaching laboratory equipment (including models) and consumables
Ensure cleanliness and organization of all teaching laboratory and prep areas
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and perform simple repairs on teaching laboratory equipment
Maintain warranty and maintenance records for specialized equipment
Request work orders for room and equipment maintenance through the college and vendors
Coordinate lab manual supply with the bookstore and serve as point of contact for updates
Work with the department chair to inform budget planning for teaching laboratory expenses, including equipment and consumables
Student Worker Supervision & Coordination
Hire, interview, train, schedule, and supervise student workers who assist in laboratory preparation, breakdown, and cleanup, as well as with social media content creation and event planning.
Facilitate efficient use of student workers by establishing clear workflows and, where appropriate, direct lines of communication between faculty and student workers
Evaluate performance of student laboratory assistants
Social Media Management
Manage social media presence for the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences
Develop concepts and create engaging content for departmental social media posts
Maintain consistent and professional communication of departmental news, achievements, events, and student/faculty highlights
Events Coordination
Plan and coordinate departmental events to build community and support student engagement, including:
Senior Banquet Welcome Back Kickoff/Picnic
Stress reliever and fun events for students each semester
Manage event logistics, including venue coordination, catering, supplies, and scheduling
Collaborate with faculty, staff, and student organizations to ensure successful events
Additional Responsibilities
Communicate, collaborate, and maintain working relationships with faculty, staff, vendors, and community partners

Qualifications Master's degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or health-related field and (2) two years of related laboratory management experience, including inventory management, ordering, and receiving, as well as laboratory safety compliance
OR
Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or health-related field and (4) four years of related laboratory management experience, including inventory management, ordering, and receiving, as well as laboratory safety compliance
